QUIZ SHOW: A Question of Sport
On: BBC 1 HD (143)
Date: Monday 29th November 2010 (starting in 5 days)
Time: 22:35 to 23:05 (30 minutes long)

The sports quiz returns for a brand new series, with Sue Barker asking the questions to regular team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell. They are joined by Ashes-winning cricketer Michael Vaughan, athlete Iwan Thomas, and two sports fans from the world of entertainment - comedian Frank Skinner and Dragons' Den star Peter Jones.

A return of sorts to the old style then; no audience behind the contestants.

Looks crap though.

I notice how most of AlexCraig's sets are quiz shows with three panellists. I wonder how many times those sets are recycled and reused?

So being pushed out of primetime then. A Question of Sport lost it for me when they made "What Happened Next" multiple choice - missing the entire point of the round being the teams coming up with their own elaborate suggestions for what may have happened. Also not a fan of Tuffers and Dawson either, and to be honest think it's time Sue moved on too.

It's a great format when done well - but a format where familiarity breeds contempt, and hence freshening up the line up every few years is crucial.

New set looks good though.

Although it was moved last series too. The One Show has basically taken it's slot.

Imo Programmes in the 10.40pm slot seem very much in high demand, maybe it will become a new home, its probably close to a comedy show like mock the week which broadcasts later, I agree The One Show has forced programmes out of the early evening schedule, but A Question of Sport could easily make itself at home later at night at similar times to Sporting shows too!

Worth pointing out though that the second episode of the new series does have a repeat showing at 7.30pm on BBC One on Friday 10th December - its old slot. So, if this slot remains, it'll make no difference to regular viewers and may even earn some new viewership in the Monday slot.

Looks like they're going for two sports stars / two celebs as guests each week. On the one hand annoying it's going away from it's roots, but on the other considering they have the same old line up of ageing sport stars every year it's probably a change which is needed.

Or in other words, it's turning into They Think It's All Over (late timeslot, half/half guests - plus I imagine they'll leave a bit more of the smut in)

The set looks awful.

I mean it looks impressive from the wide shots, but as is common lately and especially with the BBC, they've got for those screens where on close-ups they just look like glowing inconceivable dots.

And I imagine they've got rid of the audience in the backdrop so in the future they'll be able to drop them entirely and cut costs.

Horrible.

I agree with RDJ.

The set is horrid. Those dots, the colour quality, dreadful.

The audience was part of the show. As part of any re-vamp they should have included them in the new format.

Each team could have had the audience behind them!

This re-incarnation is the worst ever. Glitzy, impersonal, dreadful.

But those pictures and graphics?

Even the time-slot is wrong. It used to be a family-show, now it can't be.
Perhaps they are aiming at a different audience.

Yet another old-established show ruined. I will never watch it again. I used to like it, my family used to like it.
I used to work ON IT. Sad

Felt like it was coming from an aircraft hangar. The teams looked like they were miles away from each other in the wide shots - far from great for encouraging the banter between teams that is a part of the show.

As usual LED has been chosen because it looks great on wideshots, but on the close-ups it looks horrible (because they haven't got enough separation between the people and the screens to let the dots defocus enough, nor have they used the diffusion coating that Sky used on their News wall)

Don't like the graphics either, terrible font.

However I'm glad they've got rid of the audience behind the teams - they were annoying. I know they gave the show a "stadium" feel - which was presumably the look the previous revamp was going for - but it didn't work for me. I don't have to constantly see an audience to know they are in the studio - I'm perfectly happy with a show to have an out-of-vision audience on standard studio seating...
