I think on soaps there is a distinction between exteriors shot at the normal studio centre (say the "Square" on EastEnders), where they can easily run multicamera cabled back to their camera control area, and non-regular locations, where they are working away from base, where camcorders, or a small single camera operation is more practical.
In other words - not all exteriors are the same.
