Promo DOGs

Time they were banned? (May 2017)

Anybody tuning in to ITV2 today is greeted by one of the nastiest promo DOGs I've seen with a massive Love Island logo top right with "one week to go" underneath. Guess it's there all week then.

So insulting to anyone watching the channels other programmes - I only saw it whilst channel hopping (guess it works then) but was so distracting as they showed a scene about child grief on Emmerdale.

It always tends to be the channels that are the most insulting to the intelligence. Viacom channels - particularly MTV - have been guilty of this for a long time.

I once tuned to MTV (shudders), and was greeted with one of the worst DOG form-ups by far - the type of which would cause a seizure. I'd have to agree on that basis.

As for ITV2 - things would be more serviceable had they kept the Love Island DOG to the same size of how they've done for Family Guy.

As ever, Sky and the BBC lead the way in DOGs.

Unfortunately, they're effective since you've noticed them. I've had to do promo bugs for a couple of channels, it's usually a combination of Media Planning and Channel Planners who request them in order to push certain programmes. I've always tried to make them unintrusive by adjusting the transparency level so it disappears in certain scenes - but it depends on who designs the promo bug/has a keen eye to minimise the damage.

Australia is hella worse for this though at the moment:

They're usually onscreen for a good 3-5 minutes after every ad break.

Surely it only works if it affects the viewing figures. They could plaster that DOG over half the screen and I'd still rather watch mould grow on a patch of damp carpet than watch Love Island.

Is there a strategy to what programmes they will be placed over? As surely not everybody watching ITV2 will be the demographic for love island.

But not permanently throughout the show. It's probably only a minute or so in reality, which is fine and IMO more effective than a permanent DOG.

Just like promos, Media Planning will request 'versions' of bugs which alternates depending on what programme they want to push (so several different PNG or TARGA files depending on the playout provider). ITV2 probably have gone the 'f*ck it, it's our most popular show, let's plug it to death' approach.

True, but I've seen some horrible garish examples which look worse than just transparent white text.

Didn't the equivalent love island bug have an animating heart last year?

Well they clearly didn't consider the BGMT "Live" bug when positioning the Love Island logo.
