Pricing will need to be close to the market though, iTunes and AZ Video Download (when available here - late 2012 I understand) will be the relevant market prices, esp. if independent producers are to come onboard.

Any suggestion of undercutting will lead to predatory pricing allegations, especially considering the multi retailer approach highlighted in Thompson's speech ...

I'd expect material broadcast in the last six months will attract a premium and will retail close to the quoted £1.89 level per episode, with appropriate reductions for whole series.

Since when were free markets tied to minimum pricing to keep in line with other providers?

You're describing a cartel.

Cartel or no cartel it happens, within narrow ranges. If Barcelona gets the go ahead then pricing will be consistent with other suppliers of downloads.

Aye?

Well good luck with that then, Barcelona.

Surely the way it will succeed is by offering programmes that would be un-commercial to release any other way? My feeling is that it more about getting copies of an obscure documentary from 1983 rather than a copy of Fawlty Towers.

The big project at the BBC is to digitise everything and also provide a page for every programme broadcast both of which obviously will take a while but look around bbc.co.uk and you can see the latter appearing. It should be fairly easy for the digitisation project to just output a copy for 'Project Barcelona' too.

Of course there will never be a case where everything can be released, even if it still exists
