Big Brother. Channel five should have left this show in it's grave.

The benefit bashing shows on channel five again.

And programmes like TOWIE & Made in Chelsea. Why people want to air their dirty laundry public in the form of a 'reality show' I just don't know.

Let's be honest- Big Brother was dead. Channel 4 dropped it cos it had run its course, nobody else wanted to take it on, including the (then RTL owned) Channel 5. It was only when Dirty Des took over and saw it as something he could use to flog his rags that Channel 5 took it on.

Though nobody's really airing their dirty laundry- these shows are almost as staged as an episode of EastEnders!

And if that isn't the definition of vanity, then I don't know what is. Which brings this song to mind

Er, the 'vain' in 'bringing his name into vain' isn't anything to do with vanity. It means disrespectfully or in anger as in 'oh my god!' or 'jesus christ! '

It's not the Gospel According to Carley Simon....

Not that 'God' is her/his name....

It's the only name you ever here referenced.

Jehovahs Witnesses?

Though as everyone knows, god's name is Harold.... 'our father, who is in heaven, Harold be thy name....' Very Happy

If you want to start a thread about the presentation of the non-Christian religious channels, go ahead, it's completely within the rules. That said, I won't promise you that people will engage with you, that entirely depends on others being interested, but you won't be told it's not for discussion on here.

The problem is that I have rattled people's cages with discussions about far more innocuous material such as children's educational programmes and history documentaries.

Those topics would be fine if this was Digital Spew, but it's not. Did you miss the bit about how the forum is primarily here to discuss presentation, not programmes? People will get annoyed if you start threads about individual programmes if they're not currently relevant for some reason. The same way we don't have threads about individual news stories - unless they cause presentational changes to news programming.

Yeah, I know that.

That was a deliberate play on words, by the way.

Not everyone you are talking to here is an idiot, so don't treat them as such.

I treat people as I find them, and you're no exception

I think we should all take a nice big breath and reread this wondeful post.

Could I suggest the following would be worth thinking about :

1. Be nicer to each other.
2. Be more tolerant of each other.
3. Where mistakes are made in factual terms, politely correct them without snark or sarcasm.
4. Where opinions are disagreed with - remain pleasant whilst stating the opposite case.
5. If you can't say something nice about a fellow forum member, then best not say anything.
6. Remember this isn't just a forum visited by enthusiasts. It is also read by people working in the industry (who may also be enthusiasts)
7. Think about who is reading your posts, and how they would feel when reading them.
8. If you DO have dyslexia or another issue that may mean your posts look unusual or are difficult to read, then it might be worth putting something in your signature. A couple of colleagues I have at work who have quite severe dyslexia have a standard part of their e-mail signature that mentions it to avoid people thinking they are being disrespectful by rushing their replies. (And not everything can be picked up by spell check)

I know we're all guilty of getting caught up in personal opinions, enthusiasms and obsessions at times (and I'm sure I've been guilty of not doing everything I suggest above) - but you know this forum would be a lot more pleasant to visit if people on it were a bit more pleasant to each other.

If I'm honest, some of the conversations here amount to little more than bullying at times.

Perhaps that post could be made sticky?
Just a thought.
