I agree, the breakdown was handled fine apart from the poor guy (who sounds about 12) getting tongue tied - at least it was live!

Go back to pre-national continuity and in the Carlton Central region we would have had a pre-recorded announcement if the breakdown had happened before 12.30pm as they only had one live announcer on shift per day working practically a 12 hour shift, who also recorded the announcements for the following morning.

So in some ways things are better!

stv does seem a joke - do they not have a live announcer now until evening? - very UTV!

Yes it was a great breakdown, but well handled.

but the carlton ident holding stage with its haunting music looked far nicer than what itv churned out today.

nice slides, it's does show what a few fancy graphics actually look more classy, then their shockingly bad idents, as to the continuity announcer it's very to get tongue tied, he handled it well enough!

Well can't be any worse than ITV Play's breakdown into The Mint a few months ago (due to an on-screen graphics fault) They just replayed the ITV Play ident over and over again before going onto taped music.

What the hell was that music? Laughing

Much better than what they play with Nightscreen!

I was pleasantly surprised by the live continuity, what happened today proves how important it is on a major channel.

Same for HTV Wales. We only ever had a live announcer from just before the lunchtime news until about midnight and then it was recorded announcements during the night and the following morning from 9.25am until after 'This Morning'. Then it was recorded announcements on ITV Wales all the time from October 2002-January 2006. We might miss our local announcers but at least we now get live announcements.

Ive actually seen a breakdown once before since the new look. I think it was the first day of the new look during Wales Tonight so obviously only affected the ITV Wales region. From what I remember we got an ITV1 logo on the screen with an apology from the network announcer and then rejoined the programme.

I was impressed with the way they handled this overall. We got a programme menu and the announcer kept us informed of what was happening. Then ran through the evenings programmes (like in the good old days!). So what if he got a bit tongue tied - he is only human! This guy is one of the better announcers on ITV1. I for one cannot stand the female announcer who seems to be on the most.

It seems ITV have a tendancy to go wrong when going into ITN produced programming. The other week the announcer said over a normal ident that ITV News was coming on, then going straight to the generic ident (not even a black screen in between) saying they are sorry and we can enjoy some music. Except the music never played and 5 seconds later he said we could now return followed by the news starting as if it never happened. Talk about professional Rolling Eyes
