I don't normally watch it - honestly - but I noticed that today's scheduled episode of MI High on BBC1 has been bumped for another as the plot involved an earthquake. That reminded me of a time years ago when there was a major train crash and that same evening (or possibly the next) ITV had edited out this line from Die Hard 2:

We're just like British Rail. We may be late, but we'll get you there.

Do companies keep transcripts on hand for when a disaster strikes? Or was it more likely just luck that someone remembered the line?

I seem to remember BBC2 cutting a shot of a building collapsing in Buffy The Vampire Slayer shortly after 9/11, too.

Channel 4's shown it a few times, but to the best of my recollection it's still never been shown again in the US.

Edit : My mistake, they have shown it in the US, but with cuts.

Didn't Sky get slated for broadcasting a heavily cut version which removed every scene with the towers in shot and have therefore decided against showing it? C4 omitted it from rotation until 2007, since when they have shown a slightly edited version (removing the 'jerks in Tower 1' line).

There aren't transcripts to hand but the documentation for the programme (which the director or channel editors will have access to) have a summary of people appearing and any contentious topics that it contain. 6 days is hardly short notice though, the various planners and others who work on the channel would have had plenty of time gone through the schedules to see if there's anything untoward coming up.

It's very rare (and an amazing co-incidence) for it it to happen to a programme that's near to transmission or actually going out, although it did happen with Channel 4 and Michael Jackson. In that sort of occasion it's more luck and memory. On the night of the Soho nail bomb in 1999 BBC1 were repeating an episode of Only Fools and Horses where Del and Rodney go 'up west' and end up in a gay bar, no-one noticed at the time (but then with news reports between every programme that's not surprising)

Yes it was taken out of syndication in the us after the attacks but stations started showing it after a while. Although apparently it continued to be shown in some other countries.

The 'jerks' line is the most contentious one, one of the producers say it's 'regrettable'. It is on the DVD or that series

I remember after 9/11 they were scheduled to show and episode Captain Scarlett on BBC Two but was cancelled and replaced by an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Also in March 1996 after the Dunblane Massacre, Licence to Kill was scheduled to be shown that night but was replaced by The Field of Dreams.

I remember when the old ABC1 cancelled Scrubs on 7/7 and the day after and replaced them with Hope and Faith which included a scene where one of them did a really bad cockney accent. Probably would have been better if they'd have stuck with Scrubs!

ABC in America replaced a film on 7/7 about London being destroyed by dragons or something with Pirates of the Carribean.

Also I've said it a few times but there was a gameshow (if you can call it that) on BBC2 where three people had to make decisions in a fake crisis control centre. The last episode was cancelled as the crisis was about a hostage situation or something and was due to air the week Ken Bigley got beheaded.

I remember on 9/11 Channel 4 should have shown an episode of Futurama, I think the one where New New York gets attacked by Omircon Persei 8 (you'll know what I mean if you're a fan) and showed Friends instead, which left me slightly puzzled.

I never knew until a couple of years ago that 'Mind the Baby Mr Bean' should have been shown on ITV in Early 1993, when '...in Room 426' was shown, but because of the James Bulger killing it wasn't shown until April 1994.

I have a wonderful BBC cntinuity announcement from 9/11 saying "Due to today's events, the film 'Fire In The Sky' will now be shown at a later date", over a caption slide.

The episode of The Simpsons a few days later was also replaced as it contained a scene of Sideshow Bob kidnapping Bart in an airplane and deliberately crashing into a building.

I remember that happening too and I too was left puzzled. Also in 2004 The Railway Children was scheduled to be shown on ITV1 but because of the train crash it was replaced by Robin Hood and also after the 7/7 bombings in 2005 WWE Smackdown had to be edited to take out the "terrorists" attacking The Undertaker so there was 15 minutes worth chopped out of it.
