Is that it?! And people thought this would have a major effect on the viewing experience!

So, what exactly is the difference. All this fuss so someone can pay to put a coffee machine in the background?

I bet La Creuset didn't pay to get featured in every overhead shot, side shot etc. of the cooking segment which clearly I've noticed more than the coffee machine purely because I may have wanted a decent set of pans!

Would anyone even know it's a coffee machine anyway? It looks like a robot dog.

I imagine this is going to make reality TV even more popular with TV execs. The likes of Biggest Loser, Big Brother etc which show a 'real' life environment will be able to capitalise on certain foods, cleaning products, clothing and so on.

Following on from my previous post, I'd recommend anybody to simply search on Youtube for "Days of our Lives Product Placement." The utterly horrific content that show gives as a result of PP should make us all feel very proud to have nothing put a coffee machine on a shelf. I'd go as far as saying that it's not far from the spoof that the ITC made in the mid 90s.

I vaguely remember an inventor going on Big Brother's Little Brother and his invention (something to do with teabags I think) was placed in the house to see if/how the housemates used it.

The opportunities for product placement on Big Brother are endless. Literally everything that can be advertised could be placed on that programme and I imagine that if Channel 5 do take it then its what will probably happen.

No more black tape covering the Tesco logos.

A question just came to mind - why were product references and whatnot prohibited? I remember on an edition of Shooting Stars (the VHS release, I think) where Les Dennis was talking about eating Shreddies, and then questioned if he was allowed to say that. Surely, a company wouldn't argue if they were getting promotion without paying for it?

Of course the makers of Shreddies wouldn't mind getting a (positive) mention on a TV programme.... but Kelloggs would!

That's more of an issue, what's known as 'Undue Prominence'. The advertisers pay to have their product appearing on TV during that programme, if the programme then promotes a rival then that's not exactly fair on the one who paid.

Oddly enough it's far less of a problem on the BBC, I remember an example being given of a sit-com where a main character walked in and put down a load of Tescos shopping bags on the table in full view - absolutely fine. However when that episode was shown by a commercial broadcaster like UKTV it was an issue.

I assume that was the Teabag Bin, if so that's slightly different as it was invented by 2 former Big Brother contestants

I may think it's the weighing scales that been advertised lol not the product placement product itself

It's arguably the logo which is more distracting, having it on every break when the item only features prominently in one segment. Surely in the case of magazine shows like This Morning a logo at beginning and end, and then around the part concerned, would be appropriate.
