The announcers don't decide how long the symbols run for!
Infact, I remember last year when Duncan Newmarch the announcer who did BBC1 at christmas, said that they have headphones on and the director counts down till the ident finshes. He said it can be difficult speak as well as listening to the countdown.

Now I am aware that you can't have creative announcements and long playouts all the time but some announcers manage to do it (Dean Lydiate a prime example) therefore it can't be an impossible task.

Poor love! Now try speaking while vision and sound mixing plus listening to network sound and the London network director's countdown....oh yes and watching network's vision on preview so you can see when it's clean to join. No wonder the regional announcers used to end up going bonkers!

That's right, however none of them are to do with this thread.
