I wondered if some of the 'live auctions' on Bid Up and Price Drop are actually on tape.

The other day Adam was flogging some Cd's and stumbled over a name and place name. Yesterday was watching and he did the same stumble in the same product which sold for the same price.

Bid-Up and Price Drop are live 17 hours a day. Bid-Up used to do pre-recorded hours, but they ceased quite some months ago now. When making referrence to the facts and figures, highest bidders, Bid Up from figure etc, on the screen it is quite clearly live - otherwise people bidding at that particular moment wouldn't get their bids registered!

Is that or was that legal??

Yeah, perfectly. In the pre-recorded days, known as Hot Lots, the hour would be recorded clean, i.e. without graphics and without direct reference to graphics. Hence no mention of the bid needed price or top bidders or the last 4 digits of the phone number. Thus on the second showing of the Hot Lots hour, it would be a totally different auction but the presentation "appeared" as if it was live, by clever use of phrases such as "place your bid £5 above the bid needed arrow" etc.

It was cleverly done. There would be 6 hours of Hot Lots each day, three of which would be new recordings, and the other three would be second showings from the day before.
