I thought as no-one else has bothered to create a thread concerning this I thought I would!

ITV Lunchtime News on ITV1 (and ITVNC) showed President Bush boarding Air Force One and leaving America.

And later on the ITV News Channel Leyla Deygabegel presented live coverage of Him arriving in the UK. Not sure what all the fuss is personally but the news channels are covering it from every angle!

Here's some grabs:-

Being from Northern Ireland we're kinda used to Presidential visits... to the point of Presidential fatigue.

Apprently when the American delegation arranged the decor at a press conference at Hillsborough Castle they put all the Union flags behind the PM upside down... thanks to BBC staff it was put right before the world saw the mistake...

to be honest, I don't get why Bush coming over here is deserving os so much news coverage. I don't believe for a minute that Blair visiting the US gets any amount of coverage at all in the US (except of course maybe a throwaway story when the Americans declare that 'Prime Minister Blair of England' has visited).

I hope the prat comes and goes with as little fuss as possible. He is not worth any amount of coverage on our domestic news.

Well, he's certainly getting it!! Almost all of the BBC Four News was concentrated on Bush's visit, and to a lesser extent the BBC One News as well. BBC Four shoved the other 'top stories' to an 'in brief' section right at the end of the programme! From the captures above, ITV seem to be going mad over it too - what about Channel 4? Did anyone see their news tonight?

How come GWB needed HRH The Prince of Wales to show him from AIr Force One to Marine One. Couldn't he find the way himself? There was even a helpful red carpet if he'd have got lost!

Then again, we are talking about GWB! Rolling Eyes

Probably because the last State Visit by a President of the United States was Woodrow Wilson in 1918?

Look in your history books and then you'll see why there is so much coverage of the Prez staying at Buckingham Palace.

And people wonder why I despair at the state of education in this country - don't they teach you young ones anything these days?

'So' and 'What' are the two words that spring to mind. It makes no difference at all to anyone's life - except of course the people in inner London who are subjected to serious disruption whilst dubya is over.

No doubt what's going on this morning will be on later bulletins for everyone to see but here are some of the worthwile observations, both channels' pictures being accompanied by voiceover waffle...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc.jpg

Sky broke into their repeat of last night's Court Report on Soham to bring us this (was just getting interested in their little animated reconstruction too Sad ). I don't know why they even started it in fact, since all the stuff at Buckingham Palace is apparently planned to the second, they would have known when to start their coverage.

Minutes later they'd both removed some of their graphics:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky2.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc2.jpg

By 10:00 the commentator on Sky had taken over presentation completely with not a word from Simon McCoy (who's shift's ended now obviously).

10:02 Sky put all their graphics back on.

And while the Star Spangled Banner played, the stonkingly huge astons on both channels covered up much of the action in certain camera shots...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky3.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc3.jpg

10:11 They both see sense and remove the astons, since many camera shots are putting the action in the lower third of the screen. News 24's keeps coming back whenever they get the chance though.

Hey, they're even covering it on Bloomberg... kinda...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebloomberg.jpg

10:17 Without any introduction, Martin Stanford takes over and they go off and start things, with ticker up and a recorded report by 10:20, while News 24 continue to waffle on with unknown guests and astons covering half the action...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky5.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc5.jpg

10:22 BBC News 24 bring things to an end and move onto Michael Jackson while Sky continute to talk about events surrounding the President's visit and what's in today's Mirror.

10:25 Sky start showing pictures they're getting from inside Buckingham Palace - News 24 had to break a report on something completely unrelated to report this.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky6.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc6.jpg

10:32 The feed gives a shot of the front of Buckingham Palace and this time it's Sky who break off and go interview someone while News 24 stay with the feed that goes back to inside the palace, and Sky cut back while they're interviewing.

10:34 Mobile phone interference forces Kay Burley to terminate the interview (thought it was my own at first and went to look at phoen to see if it was ringing silently). They leave the palace and talk about the Daily Mirror again while the BBC stay at the palace until the President leaves. They start a news summary, then Sky decide to go back to the feed on a split screen... not a lot happening there though and it soon goes black...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky7.jpg

Unrelated, but BBC have gone on to Soham stuff, and the reporter at the Old Bailey (Jane somebody) has lost her microphone:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomebbc7.jpg

Still reporting it on Sky, they get some shots from demonstators, take a well deserved break, then come back for more...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky8.jpghttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.hardy63/lee/stuff/bushwelcomesky9.jpg

10:56 Sky briefly cover something else: Jody Morris has been bailed until December 17, before taking a break before the top of the hour.

And with that, I bring my screenshot and talk through this morning's events to an end. But before I go, look who's on BBC One this morning...

There was a cracking Dennis Norden moment at around 0925 on News 24. Philip Hayton was talking to reporter Katherine Marsden who was outside the palace.

They had a few communication problems at the beginning - nothing major - just her earpiece not working I think. Everything seemed normal again until Phil asked her another question, and poor Katherine had her hand across her head, thinking she was off air, and was shouting at her director or cameraman, "WHAT WAS ALL THAT ABOUT?... WHAT WAS ALL THAT ABOUT?" The poor girl was very upset.

Look out for it on ITV out-take shows in about 2 years.
