To give Carlton credit when the first set appeared there had 70 idents, Had any company ever had that many at once in the uk? When there were revised toward xmas 93 there become 25 single idents and 4 montage idents.

I was such a fan of the late 90's/early 00's Carlton hearts. A powerful set of idents putting a symbol centre stage.

The animated letters were different and worked very well also in my opinion. There were that many that the simple animation didn't get annoying. The problem with them in the central region was that they replaced the famous cake logo.

I also like the graphic idents used after the initial ones as seen in this montage

My favourite presentation ever is the BBC1 COW era. It was sheer beauty - and consistent.

The idents aren't that bad really and were at least original for the era.

.. and 'played in' from a professional Sony video disc player.

Although the idents were poor, I found the rest of Carlton's early presentation really modern and fresh and ahead of its time, probably too ahead of its time for 1993.

That was the second design of presentation they had. The background of the first was made up of fans, pot plants etc. the second had that mottled effect. The other main difference was the people in the idents didn't speak and there were montage versions

Yes Carlton's early stuff was very original and modern, a total contrast to what came before or on the other broadcasters at the time. It is very much of its time though, the bright colours and typography just screams early 90s

I would agree with these idents being ahead of their time as at the same time the other regions, including the new boys, were still using objects flying through space. They are similar to that used a decade later by the ITV and BBC.

I found Meridian TV's (one of those channels that still used things flying through space) idents less interesting than TVS's.I thought TVS had excellent presentation but of course, when Carlton launched with those live action images, it felt new and very modern.

The Carlton end boards and captions with the bold colours, different sized fonts, in unusual positions was ahead of its time, and trailer endboards even today don't use such radical design templates.

It shows how despite airing the same programmes and probably having the same audience demographics there was such a wide range of presentation designs on ITV during the 90s, some at the height of modernity, some harking back to the 80s.
