It's time for a key broadcaster to go all abstract dropping all filmed, filmic or video reality and move entirely to vivid animation again. Think classic London Weekend, ATV etc. With the computing power available now abstract idents could be really special.

Yeah, that could be a really good way to go.

Like, a million-pound version of this, souped up to the max Cool

My pick - mostly because it intro'd so many great shows - the C4-style 'interview' idents with Māori Television hosts and viewers. Withdrawn after a year or two, possibly because Mihi Forbes left the channel after a big row.

LWT could always be relied upon for outstanding idents:

IS
Inspector Sands
Until their last one - the video wall - which wasn't great
VM

Who actually produced that ident? I know the ITV 1999 set (that LWT ditched for the video wall) was English + Pockett, and Carlton from the same year was Lambie-Nairn.

In-house, wasn't it?

I'd argue Sky Cinema went in that sort of direction, given the previous set was live action (albeit complex) with a logo fading up.

I'd second this in the case of Sky1. Both of their current sets are great, especially with the quality of the CGI used for Cinema.

I adored the 2008 Sky 1/2/3 set.

Great idents for the three Sky channels of the time. The boxes one is one of my favourites; I also like how they've used the states of matter to form up the logos, and giving them an instantly recognisable feel to them.

Didn't last long sadly - as Sky restructured the entire entertainment channel portfolio with the integration of Living TV Group. The set after that had some excellent uniformity and consistency, but in the case of Sky1 (and 2) it was poor. They did a decent job with Living and Atlantic though at the time.
