Well, technically, the 1992 Christmas ident had versions that had medieval arrangements of both the fourscore theme, and the new ident music, so it did get used, sort of, after the new music came in.
I now realise this was probably to avoid having to pay royalties to composer David Dundas, which begs the question why did Channel 4 agree to the arrangement when they started.
Naivety? The scrapping of a budget which was fine to begin with?
That's interesting, I've no memory of that at all - I wonder why they were so shortlived? I wonder if there was an epilepsy concern or something like that?
According to Applemask's video on it, it was because it bore a striking resemblance to the Channel 5 logo at the time, which had been in place for around a year by that time.
To be fair though, Channel 4 did the "logo in a circle" thing a year before Channel 5 launched. The possibility of similarity would be ridiculous, since Channel 5's idents were deliberately vague and only implied "five" while Channel 4 was very obvious, 4 circles being the main point of focus. Abandoning that and going solo wouldn't have caused any sort of confusion to the viewer since once they see the blocks, they think Channel 4.
I knew a couple of the Channel 5 army of retuners at the time, and they did look smart in their basic channel 5 logo branded all weather jackets, but that was the problem for me.
The 5 in the circle logo as used in all the pre-publicity looked like it was a quick temporary thing - "oh, just stick a 5 in arial font and it'll do", ahead of something nice and dynamic once 6pm March 30th 1997 arrived..
..and then. It was the same 5. That knock up logo, IS the logo. I can see the thinking, in keeping the 5 in all the pre-publicity, but it all felt a little cheap at the time.
