I was interested to see the videos posted in the Local TV thread of New Zealand local news using title sequences based on the ITV regional news look of 2004. This got me wondering if there are many more examples of presentation elements being copied or borrowed around the world.

The example which springs to mind is BBC Breakfast Time's titles from 1986 which were clearly inspired by those of the CBS Morning News in America...

Whilst I'm sure most instances of copied pres are above board and with the blessing and maybe even co-operation of the parties involved, there have been some slightly more dubious examples.

I remember Alpha TV in Greece had to withdraw an ident in the 90s as they'd simply copied BBC2's Blade ident, but using Alpha's A logo. The video was on TV Ark, but I can't find it anywhere else now.

Also, and not from a TV company, but the American telecoms company, Bandwidth, changed their logo after facing accusations of plagiarising ITV with this logo...

So, does anyone know of other examples of borrowed, copied or re-used pres?

About the Bandwidth logo that looks like ITV, one of my country's news websites used to copy this logo off ITV before later change to another one:

In Germany, Kabel Eins' logo in the late 1990s resembles ARD's, that is the shape of the number one. This angered ARD as it was a rip off. Later Kabel Eins adjusted their logo.

The current logo is a variation of the previous one.

The thing that started this whole thread, New Zealand's channel 39

But not all NZ news shows are rip-offs or derivative.

For example, TV3 overhauled their 6pm news with a highly original look.

...Well, people here don't watch BBC News at 6, it's fine Very Happy At least they're aiming high in who they imitate!

Here's a video showing various examples of French graphics and other design elements being used in Albania and Kosovo:

Away from news, there was that time that Ce Soir Avec Arthur paid "homage" to Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show

Which of course, resolved itself in the only possible way

To be honest a lot of designs maybe syndicated like the movie ones.

Didn't Granada's local news once use a US design?

Indeed. At around the turn of the century, Granada used a design based on the one used by Hearst TV stations in the U.S., specifically WCVB in Boston (whose logo, interestingly, resembles Granada's).

Image News was a great package. And the logos although completely different shapes do look similar at the distance based on their negative space. WCVB has had that logo since their current incarnation - 45 years ago.

Keeping it in Boston their Fox station WFXT copied a Seven News promo Everywhere. Both are powerful.

Locally here in Baltimore WBFF recently copied a weather spots general gist from WBAL. WBAL ran a promo in either the late 90s or early 2000s about Maryland weather being difficult. Some of the wording from WBFF’s spot was copied verbatim “Mountains to the west .... the ocean to the east”.

Edit : Incidentally some of the first footage in the seven news spot came from the Boston region -the house fire/explosion. And the street collapse actually came here from Baltimore.

The Aussie networks are notorious for copying the American networks - news themes, station slogans and taglines, presentation

The original BSB Movie Channel ident also seemed to be a copy of the NBC Movies ident..

At least the Sky version changed the jingle. The Seven version still has the NBC chimes in it! (although, don’t they also use John Williams The Mission - aka the NBC Nightly News theme - for their news bulletins).

Similar thing happened on Conan as well:

As a result the Chinese Show changed their Intro to a black card with some text on it and the people at Conan made a new intro for the chinese Show.

Again not a TV company, but when I was out of work and searching, this company would make regular appearances:

I assume deliberate parodies like the Pizza Hut ad taking off the Lambie Nairn BBC Two idents and the Hamlet ad parodying the Channel 4 blocks don't count?
