The sofa ident was Des Lynam, not Richard Whitely, and hasn't been seen since he quit Countdown (not that it was seen much before). As far as I'm aware Old Man has only aired online, though why I'm not sure.
I always thought too that tweaked a bit both Sofa and Old Man would make great Christmas idents as an antidote to the traditional festive fare.
Opening this thread up more generally, anyone think it's time C4 tweaked it's presentation a bit - I certainly don't think the idents should go, but perhaps it's time to update the rest of the branding, which come New Year will have been around four years.
Only trouble is they have to do it justice - each tweak they made to the trailers/break bumpers etc. during the square era seemed to be for the worse, but I'm sure they could evolve the current look to give it a bit of a refresh. The winter season trailer on the press site looks pretty good with the blue and 3D logo.
More generally I think it's also time More4 had a new set of idents, although the current set have proved very adaptable for special seasons etc.

There was also another version of that featuring The Killers sitting on the edge of the stage if I remember correctly.

Speaking of which, I thought C4 were dropping Education programming, on TV at least?
Well this coming Tuesday morning (2 December), C4 are showing instalments of "Eureka! Roman Britain" and "A Giant in Ancient Egypt" between 4am and 6am.

Both those are on the Channel 4 Current Idents page of The Ident Gallery (TIG). The roller coaster one I said I've managed to get is there too.

I don't think that the Old Man has ever been screened on Channel 4, I've only seen it on the Channel 4 Sales website. It's a shame as I think it's rather quirky and I like it.
Having idents with stars in them is a dangerous idea because if they leave or the show goes to another channel you're screwed.
Hopefully they'll make some new ones.
