You'd think they'd stay away after the previous debacle.

Seconded, considering that ITV never made a profit on having Premiership highlights last time, and they well over paid for the package at £80,000,000 per year (2001-04), at that time a tenth of ITV's annual budget.

Considering the BBC have got the FA Cup back I wouldn't rule out ITV making a strong bid, but I hope that the BBC keep the rights.

If anyone saw the MOTD at 50 documentary some time ago, I think it was Greg Dyke who said 'who actually remembered/cared when the football was on the other side?'

Strange and cheeky words from MR Dyke it was he himself who complained about how Sky won the rights of ITV, and he claimed there secret deals done behide his back.

Here's a scenario - a FTA broadcaster bidding for a "graveyard" slot, e.g. Monday night or Saturday evening live games?

They're probably the flagship slots if anything.

More speculation around,

Talk of BT raising funds for the auction in the prospective rights issue in addition to the cost of either O2 or EE.

Why do I get the feeling that BT's focus, at group level, is shifting away from sport and towards getting back into mobile (particularly buying back O2).

Brief update ....

Virgin Media today dismissed suggestions of a direct bid for rights.

The Auction has commenced ....

The Premier League has opened bidding for the next tranche of television rights, for live games and highlights, from season 2016-17 to 2018-19.

There will be 168 live matches up for grabs - up from the current 154 matches, split into seven packages.

No single bidder will be allowed to acquire more than 126 matches.

The current live rights are shared by Sky with 116 games, and BT with 38, and the pair - in a battle for sports fans - are sure to be among the bidders.

In 2012 the pair forked out £3.018bn for the rights, an increase of £1.25bn - or 77% - on the previous deals.

The Premier League said the new rights sale would see the continued protection of the Saturday 3pm "closed period", whereby no games can be shown live on TV at that time.

The purpose of the blackout is to encourage attendances and participation at all levels of the football at the traditional kick-off time.

Even more ....

The total of 168 matches up for grabs is 14 more than under the current arrangement. They will be split into seven packages for which broadcasters can bid -- five made up of 28 matches and two packages of 14 matches. A free-to-air highlights package is also up for auction.

I suspect the 14 will largely come from ensuring there is always a match in the 5 usual broadcast slots rather than any additional broadcast slots.

So no Sunday night football, but Friday night comes in. The trend of moving games out of Saturday 3pm continues (likely to be no more than 5 games in that slot on any given weekend from 2016 on) but more slowly than thought.
