Reading reports online, it seems that the payment for the deal is only 13pct up on the 2013-2016 one, if so it seems reasonable considering broadcast inflation.
Not that reasonable if they weren't in a bidding war.

Very reasonable if you know anything about sport rights and the lack of any legal obligation on the EPL to keep them off subscription services.
Almost a bargain when you consider the extra programme and inflation over the length of the contract.

That's more in the pay TV market though. A 13% increase on rights they've had
no
competition for in a decade at a time when the corporation is having to make drastic cuts isn't so easy to swallow.
ITV had no competition for CL FTA rights for over a decade (and still had to pay hefty increases) and where will they be next season?
Do you really think the EPL will just roll over and just take what they're given
ITV is a commercial operation though. Although I doubt the PL would give the rights away (even though they can afford too and clearly benefit from the BBC exposure) they wouldn't really be in a position to object to the rights fee at least being frozen.
I agree though that legal obligation for free to air highlights of the Premier League needs to be put in place if they ever get round to updating the crown jewels list, along with live FA Cup games in every round.
I presume this new magazine programme will simply be a rebadged and edited version of the existing Premier League World international rights magazine. Can't see it infringing on Football Focus territory.
I don't. A bland syndicated magazine show which Sky and BT dump in off-peak slots would look pretty crap in primetime. I'm pretty sure the Beeb could show it already if they wanted to. Hardly seems worth putting in the announcement. I'm 99% certain it will be a brand new BBC-produced show.
There are other avenues they could go down. I know light-hearted football shows are generally crap, but they could go down the Fantasy Football route and be a bit more irreverent. Alternatively they could go in completely the other direction and dvote it to more tactical dicussion or extended interviews or something. Plenty of time to work it out.
As for the scheduling, pretty sure that's not a priority eighteen months in advance. I doubt Wednesday 10pm is written in the contract and it has to start there every week of the season. It'll be sometime around then.
Nothing - it'll be a 30 minute show. I would hope too the iPlayer situation is fully resolved and they don't have to wait until Tuesdays to put the show online.
Did it say it would be a 30 minute show? I would have thought it would be a one hour show considering the idea is to look back at the previous weekend's matches, analyse the MNF and preview the weekend games. Surely they would not be able to fit that into a 30 minute show.

The FA said it, yes. If it's at 10pm on BBC Two, it has to be 30 minutes. Newsnight is on at 10.30
I would imagine the contract stipulated that the Wednesday show is aired 'no earlier' than 10pm.
On the few occasions during the season where there is a full midweek set of fixtures, I'd imagine it'll be moved to a longer slot at 10.35pm on BBC One, as is the case now.
It's a positive step. Always found it a bit crazy that the BBC, as highlights rights holder, didn't have the opportunity to show midweek highlights until the following Saturday in Football Focus.
This will really be the first time there will be a weekly midweek Premier League offering on BBC/ITV since the demise of Sportsnight in 1997.
