They don't actually know what's happened yet. They know something with the Power Station/Grid has gone wrong, but they haven't confirmed what or why?

Re: UK power cut. I recall coverage within the last year of people complaining they had no power for over a week after a storm.

Was that not because they lived in the Country and powerlines were damaged more and not as modern as our US counterparts.

Just trying to think.. what's the largest power cut in the UK we've had in recent years? Was it the West London one which also affected the BBC a couple of summers ago, or something else? (not back as far as the 1987 hurricane surely?)

The power cut that wiped out BBC TV in 2000 was very small - it just affected the small area of W12.

The storms of 1987 caused huge power cuts, as did those in 1991. Although there were widespread power failures in many parts of the UK last winter.

The failure on tehe evening of the start of BBC2 was fairly large, wiping out West London and parts of Middlesex, Berkshire. as in the US it stopped tube trains and caused all sorts of havoc

A failiure the scale of what is happening in North America wouldn't happen in the UK - the scale is totally diffrent

You can check how New Yorkers are coping by seeing the latest pictures from the Times Square Webcam - We are slightly concerned at the moment because my half sister lives in Toronto and I think some people down the road from us are currently on holiday in New York.
