Two of that original set were very good but the other two were poor. Had we had more along the lines of the waterfall and mining idents I do think the set could have grown nicely.

As for giant - although I like the nod to Fourscore to me they feel more like idents for a strand or a spin-off channel than for C4 itself. Again it's the limited quantity which is the problem - idents which have some kind of quirky twist at the end soon become tiresome once you know that twist is coming.

I'm pretty disappointed that the original idents didn't go anywhere and it was just those four idents, nothing new was ever added or changed. "It is a story that we shall build on" was just a load of bollocks then?

No point building on a story that didn't work and most people hated.

Didn’t work only because they refused to continue it beyond four meagre idents

And “most people” is subjective

I have to disagree. I know very few people who had positive things to say or found them memorable. Even normos can say "oh they had the one with the pylons and the scrapyard" about the 2004 set. The 2015 ones are just too out there. And it's a shame because the stuff around them works amazingly, with the tumbling blocks. However because there is no visual clue to hold them together you lose the concept.

I think the thing is, you ask a university fresher what is the first election they remember, and they'll say "the one with Cameron and Clegg" so 2010. I think they overestimated the memory of the blocks amongst the population.

The 96 and 99 packages used the 4 as a solid object, within a circle or square. The 2005 set returned to the concept of it being component parts, but with the exception of the UFO ident, none of these showed the blocks moving. They always "just happened" to align at one point to show the logo. So it as if they'd taken too many jumps in one to go to the idea of having no logo showing.

The current idents are just as disconnected from the surrounding presentation though. If anything they should have made idents that were in a similar vain to the breakbumpers or flashes shown immediately before a programme, like the brilliant Christmas idents.

EDIT: I actually wish they would implement the full logo on their on-screen presentation as they do in print ads or on hoardings. There are some nice examples of implementation here, and the possibilities could be endless in how it is used to promote specific programmes https://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/archives/channel_4_2015_applications.jpg

I'm thinking of how Channel 5 adopted their logo for various promotions with their old logo: https://theident.gallery/five-2011-misc.php

They haven't got rid of it - they have just been cut for time restrictions. For "event" programmes you'll see the full ident.

This is another reason why I don't think they beat the original 1982 idents. The Big Fourscore should be at the start and then the events after that moment should unfold. But, I'm just a viewer and I'm sure everyone has their own opinions and ideas Smile

Not sure why they put the exact same Ident with the exact same cut of it on twice in a row.

Disagree, pretty much

I can't see how the graphics surrounding the idents are disconnected: also, Channel 4, being a recognised brand and a "different" kind of brand, doesn't need to be in your face with the proper logo all the time, although that went obviously too far with the 2015 initial package

Now, having the 4 logo visible somehow is the best compromise

The DOG helps with telling viewers who are too smart to be told what channel they're watching what channel they're watching. All the time. Wink

Has anyone else noticed the missing school teachers from the ident where the block man screams across the valley? you can clearly see two teachers falling into the screaming but the next fame once we return the two teachers are gone and you dont see them falling into the school...

I still like this ident Very Happy
