2 long-running shows axed in 2 days.

I do agree that Top of the Pops has gone downhill since 2003 but it'll be very sad to see it go.

So Grandstand, Top of the Pops. What next? BBC News?

Seems like the past few months have seen quite a few shows axed...
Grandstand, Byker Grove, Really Wild Show, They think it's all over, Top of the Pops.

I think Top of the Pops axing was imminant ever since it moved onto BBC2, once it moved channel it was inevitable the ratings would drop giving the BBC the excuse to axe it.

Everyone's getting rid of what they think of as 'old wood'.

They don't seem to have embraced the concept that if you're getting rid of something so distinctive to your operation, you need something to replace it in some way - even if it is a totally rejigged format. Rolling Eyes

Why don't they just change the format?

Stick it back on BBC1

Problem solved.

People will watch almost anything if it's on a respected channel
BBC2 is the least popular terrestrial channel, the death of TOTP was inevitable

I put my **** heart and soul into that show

I remember T'Pau doing it... admittedly without the swearing.

For a chart based show to be truly viable:

1. All singles would have to cost the same as each other.
2. All albums would have to cost the same as each other.
3. There would be no pre-release playing of tracks.

However, Top of the Pops might have kept going if it had been better produced- as a 40 minute programme on BBC1, with a central, 10 minute album chart section.

Any recommendations where we go next for our regular music fix?

Which is the best music channel for seeing new stuff?

(No crap please!)

People were saying that TOTP was past its best way before 2003. The axing has been pretty much confirmed since the move to BBC2 last year, though.

Err - isn't five the least popular terrestrial channel?

Here's a question - what will happen to all the "Top of the Pops" shows that are made in other countries under licence from BBC Worldwide?

Presumably they will continue - but won't have any UK performances to include any more?
