They don't seem to bother with capital letters on captions either!! Rolling Eyes

Sir Jimmy did a good job. I thought the bit where he shut the lights off at the end was touching Sad No Sha-woddeh-woddeh though, Hugh Dennis will be dissapointed Laughing

That was a totally forgetful final show tonight. Not one live act, and the final song to ever feature was a video not even a live performance from wherever she is at the moment.

Poor, very poor BBC. No wonder it has been axed if that’s how you treated it

Strange that the BBC are supposed to be making a massive effort to get a youth audience and axe a music show which all the audience reasearch said was needed.
The reason stated for TOTP going is that it can't keep up with 24hr music channels. Exactly what sort of positive, have a go attitude is that?
Sadly it is indicative of the BBC management at present. They can't do this because it will upset the commercial broadcasters, they can't do that because they havn't got the licence fee settlement so they won't take on Murdochs - sorry - Blairs government.
As for the programme it never recovered from being B****red up by that pretentious little camp idiot Peters.

It shoud of been launched as TOTP on BBC 3's downtime and TOTP 2 on BBC 4's downtime, it would've survived

That downtime occupied by CBBC and CBeebies?

Well i watched it tonight, and thought it was mostly awful. It was good to see the likes of Pat Sharpe again though. He's looking good! Jimmy Saville on top form of course Razz

The only real memorable moment in the whole thing was watching Jimmy hit the switch at the end and shaking his head. I wonder if he was directed to shake his head or whether he did it of his own accord?

I'm not sure what the competing with 24 hour channel argument is all about. Do 24 hour channels do live acts at all? I'm genuinely not sure, but that's because i don't watch 24 hour music Channels. I only ever watched Top of the Pops! It's how that sort of TV should be done! It should not be on 24 hours, it would be like having 24 hour gameshow channels or 24 hour Big Brother!! Oh....umm ok...

The feeling I got was that the show had been completely hashed together with bits of masking tape. They basically had one hour to get 40 years of history into it, but unfortunately it came across as messy and rushed. Even without seeing the original recording, the show came across as hacked to bits with edits here, there and everywhere. It was just too busy. At points, the "ad-libbed" links were so corny and rehearsed to high heaven I cringed. On top of that, certain presenters thought they could get away with the hideously outdated "jokes" they should have been hanged for in 1978. I'm talking here about DLT and his stupid miming in particular. At least Janice Long - a true pro - came across as a professional. A difficult job that didn't come across too brilliantly.

should have

I want to find out who began this assault on the English language and give him a damn good beating. Why people don't say "should have" is beyond me. "should have" should be thrown in the bin along with txt spk and all these other stupid spelling and grammatical things that are becoming more common.

Beat me to that one.

It's all well and good proof reading, except the standard of English grammar/spelling is so poor that they probably wouldn't notice the errors.

Incidentally, I noticed one was Marilyn Manson (or Marylin as the caption said) - what was the other?

A bit of a shame, but not unexpected, that the archive footage got cropped rather than pillarboxed

It's a crying shame that the last programme was cobbled together, however it did make me remember all those Thursday nights at 7 watching "The Pops".

However look at the last number 1? Just how endicative is that of the problems that the pops was facing? OK- I'm only 33 so the 80's/90's were my era, but blimey what dross is that at number 1.

Come to think of it, didn't my Dad say that around 1988 to me?

Anyway docu about the programme at 10pm.

I don't know if anyone has asked this, but if not......
Does this mean there is no TOTP on Christmas day anymore?

I thought it was a good send off, bit like a family member whos died and you've not seen for a while - if only i visited/ watched more would they/ the show still be alive?

I also guess it means Sir Jim has nothing to do at all now, unless they bring back Jim'll Fix it, maybe a show with pensioners requesting a bigger state pension, seeing if Jim could fix it?

Well, the "Marylin" error was inexcusable, since: -

a) this was a music programme - surely they have someone in the building that knows how to spell the name right?

b) this was pre recorded - I could probably forgive it if it were live, as you're under pressure to get things right and not make the show fall off air.

c) surely someone should have twigged when they watched the final edit before it was loaded into the server/signed off? Or do they not bother checking it first before putting it to air?

d) or maybe they were trying a last ditch attempt to have some affinity with the 'youth of today' (!?!?!) by spelling it wrong.

Bit of a poor show, especially for what is the last show.
