Well, my first ever show was 1988, and I used to just write off to the BBC after straight after recording each show - tickets would usually turn up every 8 weeks or so. Sometimes, as I was lucky enough to know some people within the BBC, I would get tickets as part of the production team, but mainly it was just pure perseverance...
and to answer Col's question... Well, there aren't really any mock up sets from years gone by - well, there *is* a bridge with some what I call Christmas tree lights taped to it - supposedly to represent the famous "neon bridges" in the late 80's/early 90's - but it didn't look a patch on the original! There is, that you will see tonight. a nice neon black and white logo of the late 60's square logo hanging behind this bridge.
Another nice neon logo behind a slightly altered current day "polo mint" set - it's the classic 70's circular logo - but - it's not the original by any means - it's very large for a start!!!!
There is also the 90's 'T.O.T.P' original sign on one part of the studio, as well as the 1998 logo and a square hanging piece of card with the original 'Top of the Pops!' logo on it. Other than that, the only memory from previous years is tonnes and tonnes of dry ice that I nearly drowned in, when Janice Long and DLT are doing a link!
I was chatting to Jimmy Savile on Friday as part of an interview and brought up the subject of the BBC archives and how little remains of the show's early years. His reponse to this and the ending of TOTP in general was
"Only the BBC could loose something so wonderful"
Say's it all really..........

May I ask how you managed to get tickets for 44 tapings? I thought they were particularly difficult to get hold of - I remember stories of a LONG waiting list.

I take it, that was from a News24 bulletin?
The neon sign looks very like the original 80's version to me.

The 1980s version of the TOTP neon logo had the Top of the Pops text in red rather than pink.
Shame they didn't try to recreate any of the classic sets, they probably didn't get the budget for it...
Also forgot to ask if they gave the audience balloons, flags and party hats etc. but from the looks of the screengrab doesn't look like it
