NO Poppies on ITN

(November 2001)

All BBC presenters wear poppies for two weeks before Remembrance Sunday ... all the guests are offered a poppy to wear (sometimes it looks a little silly like on Liquid News where pop stars suddenly have a poppy) but they are not forced to wear one. And yes BBC World have always had a 'no poppy' rule - hence why on the overnight BBC1 service you don't see one because it goes out on World.
It's the same with things like Christmas trees and decorations  -they don't appear on World as some people don't celebrate Christmas.

Does BBC News 24 have a Christmas Tree? I have only had digital for about 6 months you see so I don't know!

No. Great idea though - it would probably look best in the sports studio on the right where the (fake) monitors are.

More seriously, News 24's coverage of Remembrance Sunday last year, or more specifically, the previous day when there were several special events, was very good.

Chris Eakin went to the millennium dome and they covered the special children's service there, part of which was also shown on BBC1, and they got an interview with Thora Hird.

Then later they covered the ceremony outside the Royal Albert hall (if I remember correctly some teenagers were carrying a special torch from the cenotaph to South kensington and presenting it to prince charles) - absolutely pouring rain but they stuck with it and Chris Eakin never complained about the weather once.

And they opted into the live feed from the RAH before the event started which worked well.

News 24 did have a couple of silver Christmas trees for their first Christmas on-air.

They were behind the orange and blue sofas on the second set - used for Europe Direct, Weekend 24, Zero 30 etc. (So were seen on World occasionally!)

There was also a small tree that was put on the table which supported the little soft set monitor. If the tree was placed correctly and the monitor was used to hand to weather, it looked like the weather presenter was the angel on top of the tree!

BBC News 24 have to put a tree up in there main studio, as I said once before, that nice little laminated floor space behind the desk is an ideal spot for one and would look good with the wide shot, plus there should be a special christmas bulliatin at 6!

N24 do have a proper Christmas tree, but not on set. It's in the newsroom when it goes up. N24 can't have one on set anymore as it will be seen overnight on World

OK, this thing about World viewers not being allowed to see the Xmas (sorry all Christians out there) Tree.

There are people in the UK who don't celebrate Christmas but we still have them. It's political correctness gone mad!

To me, a Christmas without a tree is like Turkey without Stuffing!

World continues as normal through the Christmas season because it broadcasts to the whole planet and not just the so-called Christian countries.

They mention christmas of course in context of a news story, but don't treat it as if it is Christmas because for most of the viewers it isn't
