Are PMs No Longer Allowed?

Since receipt of Asa's message about them (August 2005)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

Has the PM system been removed to save bandwidth or something?

Ever since receiving Asa's PM about it taking up too much resource and them all being deleted soon, all I ever get when I try to send one is:-
"Fatal error: Call to undefined function: phpbb_clean_username() in /home/virtual/site224/fst/var/www/html/forum/privmsg.php on line 1147"

And before somebody complains that this is in a thread, YES I WOULD have put this in a PM to Asa, but the above error occurs!

Oh you shouldn't have told him. Now, chances are the whole site will crash for a few days why he tries to fix it Rolling Eyes Laughing

Nick you should have PM'd Asa about this, not wasted forum space. Laughing

Na, I got the file with all my old PMs so I don't really mind that they're being deleted but the busy message is getting worse. Maybe this will help. Confused:

I couldn't care a toss about old ones being deleted, I rarely keep any beyond a day or two, anyway.

I'd just like the opportunity to SEND one if I wanted to.

Nick, I doubt the private messaging system would be removed. It's vital for private communication between moderators and members if nothing else. I understood the message from Asa to mean that all messages currently on the server will be deleted, and then we'll start from scratch. I'll let Asa know about the problem via ModTalk for you.

Er, that's not what Asa's message said at all...

It works fine for me Nick. Perhaps Asa just wants you cut off so to speak Wink

I'm also not surprised that they take up so much space as all the old bile ste used to send me - or at least my replies to him - came up from that "save archive" link.

I think Asa has managed to keep every PM from the start of the board, and they said gmail had privicy issues.

Well, I just used a bit of logic along with the message...How on earth could the moderators communicate with members privately if there was no PM system? If you read the last part carefully:

"If you've not read this until after the 20th and wish to have a downloaded copy of your PMs, reply back and I'll get a copy from the backup I've made."

How is Asa intending for you to reply back if there is no PM system? He also said that all messages sent or received before July 1st would removed, hence those after that will remain.

Thanks for the pointer Nick - should all be working now. I think that function features in a later version of the board software which this site hasn't yet upgraded to. Hence when adding the mod to allow mass PMs to be sent, that part failed.
