The revamp, AFAIK, was not mentioned on air: Noone said 'welcome to the new-look BBC News' (I may be wrong, correct me if I am!), but over the weekend before-hand new trailers ran displaying the new-look intro idents, but even these didn't tell anyone that a new look was on its way, and most people dismissed it as a different style of trailer.

No, but they did release images of the new team and new studio to the media which were in most newspapers - so you would have been hard pushed not to see it.

I remember the last pre corporate Six o'clock News, Martin Lewis was in Scotland for the results of the devolution vote. At the end of the programme he said words to the effect of 'Michael Burke will be here at nine, but from the six o'clock team good evening and from me goodbye.'
(It was his last programme)
I have also recently seen a clip of the last Nine o'clock news of that era. Michael Burke just did the usual, told us about Newsnight and wished everyone a good weekend.
