Well the last and only bidding system in terms of financial matters was 1991. The way the 1990 Broadcasting Act worked out that any of the 1993 franchise holders could renew their franchise with the ITC providing it was done within a set time before the end of their current franchise. Hence why all the renewals earlier in this decade.
In this broadcasting climate, it's doubtful that another one would go ahead and even if it did, the biggest selling point for the contracts in 1991 was how regional we could be (minus the money!)

I'm afraid I missed the end of last night's show, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me when the franchise renewal/bidding system ended?

It didn't mention presentation, but we got quite a good selection of old idents. Some of the interviews showed clips of every ident the station ever had, i.e. TVS.

The programme last night didn't mention on-screen presentation at all. Does anybody know if UTV still has in-vision continuity?

The theme was done by Howard Goodall, and his stuff is usually really good. He did all of Red Dwarfs music.

Better programme last night, better than the previous two shows. Nice to see some old shows and some old idents such as the STV, TVS, Southern idents etc. The titles, though, are appauling to say the least. The theme tune is alright, though.

Very good programme though my DVDR missed the end too thanks to sloppy timing on my part.
Other highlights for pres fans: The Good Morning Britain titles played in almost their entirity. A clip from the news report on 31/12/92 about the new franchises. Some really old STV idents. Melvyn Bragg outside Border Television studios (still with hearts-era Border ITV logo on them). I believe he was chairman of the company at one point (maybe still is?)
(And though its really off topic, yes UTV still has in-vision continuity. Sometimes...)

He was the man who introduced TVS' 1987 identity too. Nice to see James Gatward give his thoughts on it all too.
Ah ha, wee Jimmy comes out of hiding and looks to purchase some cheap shares in ITV! Nice to see Gatward again. TVS may have been an acquired taste in the early days, but the network should have respected them.
Nice to see Carlton get a kicking, but I'm begining to think that Granada (TV not Media) has been played up to be god in this series......let's just hope it gets a bit better.

Interesting knowledge about TVS I didn't know; Greg Dyke being controller of programming for one!

Tonight's programme was a joke. I don't care what percantage or how much Charles Allen is putting back into programmes - the channel is a hot bed of ****e with very little going for it.
I found the commentaries of Greg Dyke and Michael Grade to be very self congratulating. They seemed to too often forget the mistakes that ITV have made. They overplayed their innocence over Maggie's reformation of the whole franchise thing too. Intelligent commentary coming from Dyke when he said Thames should never have lost.
But seemed like ITV were blaming bad fortunes on those franchise rounds. **** - they were the master of their own destiny.
Agreed with all the stuff about the unions though.
