Not the ITN reporter then. That would have been a shock and worthy of posting here.

Very sad news I'm sure, but once again pretty irrelevant to this forum.

RIP

I think it might be worthwhile putting a general thread where all deaths at least vaguely linked to TV, can be reported and tributes paid?

We could call it “People you’ve never heard of that have died”.

I think it would be dead boring.

OK, I've asked the mods to close the thread. I just thought those who remember Laverne and Shirley and Happy Days would be interested.

Laverne & Shirley ran from 1976 to 1983. Penny Marshall played Laverne DeFazio, a character who had originally appeared in the internationally huge hit series "Happy Days". But Penny didn't spend her life in sitcoms - she became one of the most successful women Film Directors in US movie history, "Big" (starring Tom Hanks" was the first $100 million grossing movie to be directed by a woman. Penny Marshall was the younger sister of TV Producer/Film Director Garry Marshall, and was an engaging, funny and down-to-earth professional. She will be sorely missed.

Not gonna lie, I initially thought it was about Penny Marshall from GMTV, but sad news.

There's no guidelines to what deaths are appropriate to TVForum really, but I guess those that would have an impact on TV schedules, or those that involve TV presentation (newsreaders, presenters etc) would be more suited to discussion.

If the person hasn’t been mentioned here when they were alive, or they aren’t such a massive star that their death is likely to cause changes to the schedule, then it probably isn’t within the remit of the forum.

Recently, people such as Jacqueline Pearce, Barry Chuckle, and Stefán Karl Stefánsson has their tribute threads on TV Forum. I had never heard of any of them before their deaths, but others have, and they clearly left big marks on the medium of television. In any case doesn't it make sense to ignore a thread one that one isn't interested in, rather then whining about it?

As others have pointed out, Penny Marshall was an important name in television and film history, so I don't see why a thread devoted too her passing should suddenly be deemed inappropriate. It takes no effort and no inconvenience to simply move on to another thread.

It seems to be one of those issues that can polarise people. A while ago I posted about Richard Baker's passing and there was a lot of response. Maybe it was because he was such a well remembered figure in the UK

It seems that the level and content of response depends very much on our knowledge and/or attitudes towards that person. Admittedly Laverne and Shirley wasn't as well remembered as Happy Days here but it was still a popular show. Likewise much of Ms Marshall's later achievements were in film and therefore out of the remit of this forum.

But I felt it was still worth mentioning.
