There was nothing fundmentally wrong with Pebble Mill & it was far cheaper to restore the building than lease insufficient space at the Shoebox. Pebble Mill went because of internal politics and a mad ethos at the time that the BBC had to be seen to be at the centre of the community. Hence the headlong rush to build studios in impractical office spaces just to get a good city centre frontage - with a shop & open centre.
