We are PC, BBC finally admits

Well, it had to be revealed sooner or later.

I don't know what's to be done about it in terms of eradicating this bias completely, but you can't tell me it's impossible to at least take steps toward making sure it doesn't continue.

If the BBC actually listened to views, rather than made these judgments purely on race or religion for the sake of keeping PC, I'm sure they'd find the very people whom they now favour, don't want this "positive discrimination" either, just like everyone else.

It should be that when our news is being covered, when programmes are being broadcast, it is balanced and neutral. It should be the job of the organization to remain such. As it very much appears this isn't the case, we have a serious problem here, and the Beeb surely are putting their reputation on the line.

How can we have any pride or respect left for today's BBC, if this discrimination - which ultimately affects what we see and hear from them - continues?

It's doing the public nothing less than a disservice , it should taken seriously and must be sorted out now.

So if the BBC stopped being PC, would you want racism on TV and putting one race ahead of another. PC has its good and bad sides. Christmas becoming Winter Festival, is a bad thing, giving each race its own say, is a Good thing

I'm with you on the Xmas / 'Winter Festival' issue.

However I get the impression you might have missed a point here:

You seem to suggest that in the current PC climate there is no racial prejudice on TV, or that PC = fair and neutral, which is not entirely true.

I do agree with that, absolutely - People from all walks of life should be allowed to voice an opinion.

But this isn't about each race having a say. Rather, this particular case seems to err on the side of an actual bias toward a particular point of view or a particular group. A bias that shouldn't exist, especially within the BBC, as it can upset the balance and impartiality of news for example, as well as what is communicated in other programming - something which I think would rather not be wanted.

There can be discrimination against the majority , with minorities being favoured; a form of what has been called 'positive discrimination', but this is a bizarre and dubious term in itself, as there is nothing good in any form of discrimination against a group! All it is in effect, is when folks in any minority are singled out on those grounds alone, and not for any credible or substantial reason.

As an example:

To some people, your may relate the word 'racism' to a person showing biased dislike toward another person because of their skin tone.

Yet a white person showing biased favour toward another person because of their skin tone / religion / age / country of origin / sexuality is equally prejudiced.

All prejudice is wrong, therefore the current PC practice should be curbed, in order to restore a balance and eliminate any bias.

Yes, but BBC News is awfuly biased towards Labour, and PC. Sky seem the most neutral out the lot supprisingly! Laughing

I disagree, BBC News has a wealth of journalists from many backgrounds, you cant be saying everyone has a bias towards labour. Look at thier political editior nick robinson for example, he was the chair of the young conservatives for several years. One cannot base a political bias on colour that would mean channel four is bias towards veritas or ukip, and itv toward conservative. That can't be the case?!?!

I was going to come up with an anti-Mail rant earlier but really couldn't be bothered -- except to say, why is it that it's always the Mail that comes up with these stories? Anyone would think they had an agenda or something?

I seem to recall during the Hutton thing, the Mail even said something along the lines of 'We know we've had it in for the BBC in the past, but that's just to keep them on their toes. On this occasion we can't deny they've shown themselves to be a truely worthwhile organisation for the British public'. I wish I'd kept the article really! Laughing

[luxto n]Finally they admitted it, the leftie sandal-wearing pinkos! Let us bring back TV for the white middle-class heterosexual person with christian values within the age range of 25 to 60, majority rule and all hm? Forget all these other minority groups, they're not us ! Where's my rotating globe with added parallax mirror?[/luxto n]

Now now Nini, remember those weeks of painstaking training I gave you at that camp on Snowdon. Whenever you feel that fire building in your throat, just think of all those pink fluffy clouds, and cuddly bunnies, and all will be well again. (A little concerning to see how easy that swear filter is to get round mind o.o)

There is PC and PC. Some see PC as pandering and tokenism, that is the reality of it at present, but the ideaology behind it, showing equal favour to all parts of society. is what it should be about. It should be called 'correctness' without the 'political'.

As for the Christmas issue, based on the callers into LBC, there was not a single muslim caller who took offense to Christmas, and there were many muslim callers.

On paper, everything could be offensive to anyone, but why don't they ask what these people want, before making changes on their behalf. Its the same with Conkers, and School Trips etc. Get parents to sign a liability wager if they want to cover their own Aszes, instead of banning it outright.

However, and this may sound hypocritical, smoking should be banned, and smokers should be badgered to stop. Only because second hand smoke harms others, if people want to kill themselves let them, like those who choose to drink alcohol and take drugs. Which is also an excuse for legalising drugs.

I think the term 'postitive discrimination' was named because it wasn't looked as taking privileges/rights from the majority and not doing so with the minority, to play safe, I think it was looked as leaving the majority alone, and giving the minority more rights, just to play 'safe', ie 'postitively discriminating against the minority', as opposed to negatively discriminating against the majority.

Whether this is a Euthamistic (if that is a word/sp.?) take on this action, I don't know, but it is a good 'half full/half empty'-interpetation example, in my opinion.

I have to agree with your sentiments. The title of this thread 'BBC admits being PC' well, I personally, would rather a politically correct organisation which ensured due deference than one which placed the interests of a few ahead of others, simple as.

The Mail article was only confirming what I had long been thinking myself over the past three or four years. And Nini, the word censor isn't there to be circumvented.
