I wouldn't base any judgements about the original video quality of shows on PBS UK from what you see on the live Sky Digital feed. The channel is going out with terrible compression (presumably at a very low bit rate?)
This was demonstrated pretty well when I compared the Sky+HD recording I had of The Smartest Machine on Earth recorded from PBS's main linear feed, and the same programme available on Sky Anytime (which will have been recorded in the background from a Sky Anytime transponder at a bitrate chosen by Sky - and probably a lot higher than that used by PBS for their channel...)
The Anytime version looked pretty good for 16:9 SD, the PBS version looked pretty dreadful.
Not a problem with the source material, just the channel being uplinked on the cheap.
Don't know what 60i/50i conversion is being used - but it looks a little smeary. (May not be a Snell Alchemist or a high-end For A...)
