Paul Sinha's TV Showdown

Sort of a TV version of Question of Sport-ish

Didn't Gaby Roslin host A Question of TV about a decade later?

I had to look that one up, but yes. There's also We Love TV which was hosted by Gloria Hunniford.

Paul Sinha's TV Showdown launched this evening on ITV. Hasn't been received too well on Twitter. Think it has potential with some changes but for me it didn't play to Paul's strengths as a quizzer or comedian. A tad too scripted and the ad-libbed parts were most entertaining. Could also have done with some more quizzing as the rounds were quite slow and short, if they went with Question of Sport as a template I think they'd be closer to a good show.

That has previously been done on BBC One, something which was called A Question Of Entertainment back in 1988 hosted by Tom O'Connor. It quickly flopped and morphed into the more successful and longer running That's Showbusiness.

Not forgetting A Question Of Pop (or maybe we should).

In Paul Sinha’s TV Showdown there was a lot of TV geekery in the opening titles, and also in the style of clock used for the speed round.

Also interesting they had to credit that it was based on Telly Addicts, and also there was an endcap at the end saying it was partly funded by the UK Government

Yes some nice touches. I wonder how many people (beyond this forum) would get the reference of that clock graphic?

The Telly Addicts credit is a strange one, not least because the original series didn't credit Unique (Noel's company) unlike Noel's House Party. Did Noel buy the rights to the format retrospectively? I noticed the name Guy Freeman credited as Exec Producer, he (or somebody of the same name) produced/Directed NHP, so perhaps the credit was just a courtesy to his former colleague?

Wikipedia suggests Unique was credited in the last two years of the show, and according to UKGameshows the last two years of Noel's House Party. I can only assume Noel created the shows and was able to hold the copyright to them, then later set up Unique to effectively make more money out of them as his company was co-producing them. A bit like how Saturday Night Takeaway has been a co-production with Ant and Dec's company Mitre and Gallowgate before that. But before 2006 the show was entirely produced by ITV.

As for the Telly Addicts credit, it's there because this show is literally Telly Addicts, just with a bit of slight reformatting and a name change. But it is officially the Telly Addicts format.

Yes that Guy Freeman is the same Guy Freeman from NHP.

Yes, part of a flourishing of spin-offs from the brand. A Question of Pop was good fun, but A Question of TV definitely wasn't. A Question of Sport had 'home' and 'away', A Question of Pop had 'A-side' and 'B-side' and A Question of TV had 'easy' or 'difficult'. A bit uninspired.

The last, terrible series of Telly Addicts was a Unique production but the previous series had Unique involvement, I had a couple of the Telly Addicts books which had several mentions of Unique in them (one of them had a page where Noel plugged his Unique Spring Water).

I remember the last TV quiz in primetime, As Seen On TV with Steve Jones on BBC1 a decade ago, also had a credit for Unique even though the format didn't seem to have much to do with Telly Addicts, it seemed more like That's Showbusiness if anything. I also don't think there was much here that was unique to Telly Addicts, so maybe it was just a gesture of goodwill to stop Noel moaning.

I thought this was alright but nothing special, the difficulty level as mentioned was all over the place and, like the Pop Quiz revival the other year, the questions are so basic we shouldn't have to spend so long on each one.

Didn't Charlie Brooker do one as well?

The panel show about television is quite a well worn format, there was also It's Only TV...But I Like It which aired in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Although, I don’t think Noel has anything to do with Unique now does he? Although he may still get a royalty for the format.

I don’t really get the whole Telly Addicts link, surely they could have rejigged the rounds that are similar a bit more. As mentioned it’s m not like there haven’t been other TV based panel/game shows since, It’s Only TV But I like It and that Richard Bacon one on daytime ITV spring to mind. I’d argue the Telly Addicts name would have been more useful to market this programme than the format.

It was almost as if Unique own the rights to the very idea of a quiz about TV, so had to be credited, although having said that I was never a regular viewer of Telly Addicts so don’t know how close the rounds were

Well both had rounds where they were shown a clip and asked three questions and a final quickfire round where the team had 12 questions split between them.

So why are they not crediting Question of Sport as well? Smile

I would imagine it was a case of starting with the Telly Addicts format and working out how best to adapt to their needs.
