A Friday night show would be great for Paul O'Grady at about 8pm on Channel 4.

I agree - be perfect for him and fill a difficult slot for C4.

Not week in, week out though - perhaps reduce his daytime series to about two series of 8 weeks, and then have two series of 8 episodes running in primetime, and then perhaps extend Richard and Judy's runs slightly.- or throw something else into the cycle (like Come Dine with Me) and have R&J run in three eight week slots rather than two 12 week slots.

And considering changes are required to his daytime show, they'd definately be required for primetime. "The New Paul O'Grady Show" wouldn't work in primetime - but having two guests then throwing in a musical guest and perhaps some strange - but professional act - to complete the hour would work well.

It's not a route C4 should be exploring. It was one thing acquiring a light entertainment format for teatime, but prime time would be a completely different matter, it's typical BBC1 / ITV1 territory.

Let's remind ourselves of C4's remit ;

"The public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular:

demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;

appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;

makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
exhibits a distinctive character."

Unless he's presenting Dispatches, Paul O'Grady is mainstream light entertainment.

However in view of the recent report which gives C4 a very bleak future and likely to be loss making by 2012, you could easily see the potential for this to happen.

First run original programmes have declined, acquired programming has increased and there has been a drop in the level of serious factual output. C4 is likely to struggle without regulator intervention or the further dumbing down of it's remit.

It's worth remembering though that this sort of show has now all but disappeared from the BBC1/ITV1 primetime weeknight schedules - and Friday nights has always been the night off from the serious stuff for C4. It's would fit C4's remit better than A Place in the Sun - though to be honest it's more about easily filling a difficult slot - a trendier, more up to date show would be more welcome.

Just on that second bit which has been widely reported about the fall in "serious factual" programming. It should be noted that survey only covers up until 2005 - and things have changed since then. In the last year C4 have marked out Thursday night for extended documentary films and significantly increased the series length of shows like Dispatches and Undercover World.

Yes, there is no doubt the more "factual entertainment" side has become more dominant since 2000 - but to be fair to C4 I'd expect that in the last year or so the balance has began to swing back the other way.

Anyway, back on topic...

He was excellent at Lily Live! when he was over the other side, along with Jayne "Yana" Tunnicliffe/Bickerton. I know he doesn't want to do Lily again full-time, but he could do the same sort of show as himself.

I'd prefer that to Charlotte Church... or even Graham Norton Surprised for late-night C4!!

Today the show was on in the background and as another poster has said Paul just looked so disinterested it wasn't true.It's reached a dead end as the catchphrases are old,guests are the same,competitions not changed in 6 series.Something needs to be done and I would go for a weekly show starting at around 9pm or 10pm on a weeknight.Run it for 8 weeks and let Paul be exactly the kind of comedian he is.Back on the five slot it should be Richard and Judy on for longer but rotating for something like Come Dine With Me and A Place In The Sun.Personally I think Paul O'Grady at five o'clock has run its course.

The problem is, Paul's humour when it started was "I can't be bothered to play by the rules" - now he can't be bothered to be bothered about the rules!

The show needs a revamp. That caller peelboard thing is rubbish!

Does anyone know when Paul's 2 year contract for Channel Four comes to an end? I know he started the "New" Show in March 2006 so does that mean by the end of this year he could leave the channel if he wants?

I want him to stay but I really want things to change. The idea of giving him a prime time slot would be interesting. What would the show be like if it was around 8pm/9pm?

God no. POG should never be allowed on CH4 on Friday Night's. Speaking of which- remember when Friday Night's on CH4 used be good? Those days are fast becoming a distant memory. Rolling Eyes
