The show excelled itself yesterday with Mariah Carey - or did it? I'm sure Paul has been very bitter towards Mariah in the past yet when she was on the show.. "Oh don't worry Mariah, I'm just the same!"
Didn't he actually say in an interview that he was cautious over her coming on, but was surprised about how down to earth she was? Or was that somebody else
I agree though they do need to get some new guests on the show. It is tiring seeing the same guests over and over again. But unlike Jonathan Ross, Friday Night Project, who have large budgets, probably Paul O'Grady can only afford these type of guests with an occasional A lister?
Most "A listers" won't be paid for appearance on chat shows - it is the "Z listers" who get paid.
What actually happens is that "A listers" only do a few shows - and the shows that they DO do usually require some degree of exclusivity, so that it doesn't look like they've got the guests that every other show has also got.
You'll often find that the higher profile shows will turn a guest down if they find out they're going to be on GMTV, Breakfast, Richard and Judy, This Morning and Paul O'Grady (or a combination of them) - so if you want your guest to appear on a high profile show (Parkinson, Jonathan Ross etc.) you don't push them onto everything else as well...
In cases like these - you don't have to pay the guest. They are normally on to plug something (film, album, theatre appearance, musical tour etc.) in the firstplace.
The shows that guests chose to appear on very much depends on the audience they are trying to target - which includes, but isn't always just about, the ratings of the show. Richard and Judy and Paul O'Grady appeal to a certain type of audience, Jonathan Ross to a different type of audience - and different guests will be booked by each, and agents and PRs will approach certain shows with a knowledge of the audience they want to target.
Often "Z listers" are booked to appear on shows when they can't get decent guests - or they need them to be on there for a reason. In that case the show may approach them - and ask them to appear - and would often pay them for doing so - particularly if they aren't plugging anything...
Paul O'Grady is a good show for a certain type of guest - but it is not exactly a massive show in comparison to others - and so they won't be first choice for SOME A-listers. It isn't a case of Paul O'Grady not paying enough for guests to be on - it is a case that some guests "people" wouldn't consider Paul O'Grady the right show to be on.

.
Is that only in Britain .
I ask because I read that in the US every guest , A listers included has to be paid the appearance fee. What they do with it is up to them .
The appearance fee thing may be a US Equity or legal requirement (you may have to receive payment in return for surrendering the broadcast rights to your appearance) - in the UK you just sign a release form.
Certainly many UK guests aren't paid for appearances - particularly if they are on to promote a play, movie, album, TV show etc.

I had a feeling that the reason, as it would conflict with UK regulations about promoting
