The bits where kids just walk on half way through the show but don't know what they are doing, and Paul doesn't notice them as he's chatting away and then they say a line nervously, always looks pointless to me
It's not even that. 2 editions per week are pre-recorded, so technically he works for 5 hours per half a week - plus, has a week off mid-series (although given his past heart ticker problems I can let him off that one)

the problem is the current format still get MORE viewers than anything else!
so even if it going downhill it still got the viewers, and so the format does not change!

Yes, he's had 3 heart attacks and I don't think he's in the best of health to be honest.
At the end of the day, if it aint broke, why fix it.
It's there to cater for an audience thats mainly female, elderly and children, and it caters well for them.
Why try to change the show that could result in a lot of people not liking it as much. Theres not much that they can change features wise, they have guests, they have features, they have games.
As for the opening comment about the set, good on him, I'm not sure why Titchmarsh's set is identical to Paul's old one, they could have done something such as put him in a house, open house (with gloria hunniford) style.
The set is different to the old one. It's more enclosed in a way, with the new enlarged entrance to the right of the performance area, rather than someone squeezing in from behind the plasma, and the rounded corners all make it feel smaller. Maybe it's just me. I do like the new background, its stylish, yet vibrant, something that I think T4 were hoping to achieve with their new set, rather than the televisual mess that they revealed on Sunday, anyway I digress.
All in all it's a welcome return to a great entertainer. I do agree about his lack of doing anything else, it may be through choice, but then again I don't think that he should have cut himself away from ITV as much as he did.
The main issue is that there are no new ideas on the show. Items such as the Organ Game had to be dropped and to fill the space they just extended the other items. The production team must be the laziest in the business
Also how difficult would it be for Paul to pop along to Tescos and offer to 'pay' for someone's shopping in his 3 months off rather than getting the 'essex twins' to do it. Considering how they throw him about during the show, it'd hardly be the cause of a heart attack
Paul's opinions that change from day to day are quite grating too. He'll be slagging someone off with great applause one week and then have them on the show as 'the one and only...' the next
The problem with the members of the "public" he uses is he's used the same ones for about 5 years - they'd work much more effectively if they had different regulars each season.

Ok, I will agree in part to that. Yes they do tend to do the same features, but they always do something different as part of the programme, whether it be irish dancing, west end production, theatre skit, etc. The features are repeating a lot, like more experiments today, but surely they've done this on many shows for years.
Great to see Paul back on tv I could not stand Richard and Judy. They are just too smug. I can't wait for September when they finally leave.
The show may have the same features but it is the highest rated teatime show on telly and Channel Four know it so why change too much. If viewers didn't like the show, then ratings would have fallen and Channel Four would have pushed Paul and Olga TV to revamp the show completley.
I wonder if ITV1 will try another chatshow in the 5pm slot try to outdo Paul?

Shows like Letterman have survived (with huge ratings) churning out the same old format and guests for years.
