good point. you could tell him popping out of the box was over rehearsed. HE was REALLY IRRITATING laughing at Pauls "drunk" behaviour (which got boring within 5 seconds) the "Finale (?!)" was pretty cheesy aswell. Why was it a Finale i want to know. Its a pretty shbort break, 2 days Rolling Eyes

Paul's drunk behaviour...

..oh how we laughed... not.

Tonight's show was a bit of a scripted shambles to be honest. Are any of these shows live these days?

Paul is at his best when he ad-libs thats what made Lily great. All this planned mayhem just doesn't work because you instantly realise Paul is in on the jokes...but I suppose it has to be that way.

You're not short of a panto dame when he's about Wink

Paul occasionally has a rant about having to read off the autocue; he usually looks at Bert and utters: "I can't read off this thing", or something similar.

I agree he's at his funniest when he's being spontaneous, it usually shows when he's interviewing his guests. I actually think he's funnier as himself, he was a bit too coarsely obvious as Lily in my view; either way Lily has now retired in a Brittany convent, so I doubt we'll see her returning anytime soon Wink

I wonder if they're going to do the 500th live, or has it already been pre recorded. I must say that I did enjoy tonights programme a lot with the Indiana Jones theme, a very good show, a bit different to others, and I always love a good theme show, he does seem to pull them off very well.

Already recorded. I preferred the show on ITV.

What difference does it make whether it's on Ch. 4 or ITV?

Because the ITV version was much better, with items taking the mick out of Paul rather than completely random stuff which he always looks so embarrassed doing. It started good on C4 but has been going downhill fast for the past year imo.

Funny how they have the tapes of early shows but still can't show it because ITV PLC won't let them. I bet if they threw money at them they'd be lining up with tapes Rolling Eyes

Yes I see what you mean, but I think they've only recently changed the way they do the show. I think they should go back to the older type of shows with the organ and Paul having the p*ss taken out of him completely Laughing

Yeah I know what you mean, don't worry Smile However his "birthday surprise" is looming, so will the likes of Sonia crop up to dish the dirt?

I suppose one advantage of Lily, was that he could get away with much more as a fictional character Laughing Perhaps the POG Show could be a tea-time friendly version of the outrageous Lily Live (but obviously with Paul appearing as himself)?

Well they could maybe do a late night show once a week, that would be great Laughing

I don't think the 500th show was very good, there were hardly any highlights, most of the show dominated by Julie Goodyear, and the big finale was just a live version of that 'old grady' song that they've been using every episode all series

Yes I wasn't really impressed either. Was hoping for a live show at least

We were on about this just the other day.
When Paul started with his tea time show I could have seen him so easily doing a late night version or something late night.
But now I think of him as too much of a family entertainer, and by doing a late night show and swearing, etc. would tarnish that in my mind I think.

That's true, but it would allow some of his more outrageous guests to say what they like, as you can tell they just want to shout out something bad lol. Sharon Osbourne for example Laughing

Yeah there's a thought! Laughing

Actually that struck me when he had Jackie Collins on the other week; yeah, it was amusing and fun . But not as hilarious as when he took to reading one of the more 'graphic' extracts from one of Jackie's novels, when she guested on Lily Live in 2001. It involved allusions to Monica Lewkinsky-- I think you get idea Wink

Sadly Paul has retired Lily permanently now, I think he has said that it's too much effort getting tarted up to be her these days.

I think he could get away with doing a late night show and a teatime/family show-- Graham Norton manages it at the moment. Confused

Apart from last Monday and Tuesday's episodes, all the other episodes of the week looked like they were pre-recorded, as the announcer on all of them introduced it as simply "please welcome Paul O'Grady" and not "live from London..."

Maybe it was because Studio2 was to be used by other shows that week or because they had the 500th special and the Indana Jones Special, and with a bank holiday coming up, it would be better to pre-record them instead.

Apparently they will be back to the live editions tonight.

The series will end soon on 13th June so only a few weeks left of the run. I wonder if they will give a new look to the show for the Autumn/Winter series starting in September?
