By it's definition you can't have a network of one thing. When used in a single channel name it's just an Americanism

Not really an Americanism as such, it's more about a channel trying to appear bigger than it is.

NBC Network, ABC Network, even the ITV Network, et al are exactly that - a network of stations under the same banner.
I'd say for the likes of Cartoon Network, Fox Business Network, Food Network and now Paramount Network its about trying to appear like a substantial beast of a station rather than just a playout system in a cupboard.

The word 'network' somehow gives an impression of scale that channel does not.

Think since the 80s-90s network and channel have become pretty synonymous.

I imagine it will just be called or referred to on screen as just Paramount though. Paramount Network seems like a mouthful when just Paramount is more punchy.

A few filler programmes in the morning, and a sprinkle of evening drama, but otherwise it's very much a film channel. It could be good competition for Film4 and Sony Movie Channel.

The whole "...makes you LOL" series is infecting more channels. It's filler crap, literally just videos pulled from YouTube and other video sites. And Access... really? No-one cares about these televised entertainment updates. We all have computers and phones and know all the information these little things try to tell us. If they end up splitting the evening films to have 5 minute Access breaks all the time it will just ruin whatever image they are trying to convey. Then again, the film selection and aforementioned programmes are hardly screaming "great new channel with premium content, step right up!" Made for TV rubbish films (3 have Deadly... in the title on consecutive days). Any films aren't worth watching until after 4pm and I'll bet they're cropped and edited for content seeing as some are 12/15 films on well before the watershed.

All of C5's digital channels basically seem the same.

Really?!

5USA - home of US crime drama (Chicago PD, NCIS, Law & Order, CSI, Bull, Longmire, Rookie Blue, Grimm, Training Day, Taken, Columbo, Chicago Justice etc) is nothing like Channel 5's other spinoff channels.

5Star - younger female skewing factual entertainment, drama, comedy and films for post-BBC Three days (The Magicians, The Shannara Chronicles, Dance Moms, Baby Ballroom, Badass Brides, Bad Teen to Ballroom Queen, Celebrity Ghost Hunt, Emerald City, Empire, Star, Fresh Off The Boat, You're The Worst, Riverdale, Strip Date, Sex Pod, Don't Tell The Doctor).

5Spike is the successsor to Bravo with factual entertainment, drama and films aimed at men (Knight Rider, The A-Team, Street Hawk, Airwolf, Spartacus, Impact Wrestling, Bellator, The Player, Powers, Black Sails, Six, Toughest Prisons, 19-2, Police Interceptors, Battlebots, X-Files).

There are a few TV programmes that are interchangable between 5Star and 5Spike but if you cannot see the difference you need your eyes testing!

Really?!

Yes. They're all padded out with movies and cheap factual and that includes the main channel too.

It appears to be broadcasting in 4:3 letterbox format.

If you're a broadcaster like Viacom launching a new channel (network Very Happy ) in the UK, then I would expect it to be in HD.

C5/Viacom haven't even managed to get 5USA/5STAR/5SELECT broadcasting on any platform in HD except through the catch-up service (on Sky at least).

I understand they want the additional market from Freeview, but I think quality is better than quantity. Opening more SD channels is not really the answer here. At least have Paramount in HD on the other platforms.

It's weird because Viacom is a big company, yet they can't afford to make their channels HD? I know that maybe it's hard but I don't get why they haven't made any of their networks HD (apart from the main ones, Nick/MTV/Comedy Central), 480p would be acceptable.
