I'd argue Sony's reputation is still strong in this country as an electronics manufacturer, but their problem is other companies like LG have started making much better things for much less.

True, but the Xperia mobile phone range for example (and I'm a handset owner) isn't as good as Motorola for example who pack a lot more in their Moto G range than the Sony budget range while Samsung and Apple rule the roost in the mobile market. Ironically, LG's cheapest pay monthly phone isn't on a par with the Xperia E5.

Sony's tv channels are cheap and cheerful with the electronics on the next level, but not a premium brand by any means.

I don't know where you get that idea from. The only reason Sony has a mobile range at all is because it allows them to test out their premium conponents that make it to the next generation of iPhones and other premium smartphones. They made some of the first phones with 4K cameras and 4K screens.
.

Sony's handsets could be a lot better. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Xperia owner and the E5 does the job, but by any means, they're not LG, not Samsung and certainly not Apple. They're a mid-range electronics brand who happen to have mid-range tv channels which like the Xperia plod along, but they're not stylish by any means.

Sony has owned Columbia and Tristar for nearly 30 years, so they have got a long association with the film industry.

I wouldn't say that Columbia and Tristar are "cheap and cheeful", so those brands should add something to their movie channel.

Big difference in acquiring established Hollywood film studios and distributors over crap channels in the UK.

In any case, film isn't the money maker it used to be either. There's more money in gaming than in an average blockbuster.

Precisely in Sony’s case.

In fact, Sony has been struggling recently with its movie business. I haven’t been researching much about the extent of this, but there have been reports about the decline of said division.

In contrast their PlayStation division has become their biggest money maker thanks to the roaring success of the PS4. But even their consoles aren’t considered to be premium products in the age of high end PC hardware becoming more accessible (and perceived more as premium material).

Personally Sony is respectable and reputable as a electronics brand, but not too premium by any means. It easily extends to their TV channel portfolio - decent range of channels, but some of the content isn’t as good as on other channels aiming for the same demographics as Sony is.

The E5 is a mid-range model. It's like judging Samsung's phones by only looking at the A3.

Yet if you look at Sony's higher end models, they're nowhere as good as a higher end Samsung or the iPhone 7s. You may be a Sony fanboy bilky, but the facts are that Sony is not a fashionable brand. They do phones that are better than the budget phones with 8GB storage, but not one single model in the Xperia range is as good as a Samsung top end or a mid-range Motorola.

Xperia phones do the job, but you wouldn't be seen dead going out with them.

When I chose my last tv set, I looked at LG, Samsung and Sony models and personally on design and picture, the LG's and Samsung's were a lot better for the price than the usual black blandness from Sony.

There was a time when Sony were the absolute dons of electronics, my first walkman was from Sony where the build was excellent and lasted a long time. But that was nearly 30 years ago.

PlayStation is pretty much the only part of the sprawling empire keeping the Sony brand going. The Film/TV division is in the toilet and has been the subject of spin-off rumours for a while.

I'd agree with that. Gaming is still an area where Sony excel at along with Microsoft with their XBox range. The latter is even worse as they've tried going into other areas, such as mobile phones. Acquiring Nokia was a farce when they stuck Windows 10 on their handsets when ioS and Android were well established. Nokia has been since sold on to another company who reintroduced the 3310 and a selection of dire Android handsets.

The convo moved onto phones as a comparison between Sony's not very exciting tv operation and Sony's not very exciting electronics bar the PS consoles.
