I assumed that Paramount was replacing 5Spike on freesat - I guess not

Why would you assume that? The launch of Paramount Network as a new channel in the UK has nothing to do with 5Spike which continues as normal.

Because Paramount is the new name for Spike in america.

Oh right, Paramount Network did replace Spike in America, but that was never the plan here.

While still trying to catch one of the idents, I have to say this is one of the poorest new channels that have been launched. The channel has no direction, and seems to be filled with cheap fillers. The other day it had Funny cat videos clips show... Maybe it should just move the US dramas to FIve usa and just make the channel a pure film channel?

Well, my view is that Viacom have suffered from truTV-itis .

Instead of replacing the existing 5Spike, launch Paramount Network UK alongside the brand it is meant to replace and let confusion reign.

Personally I would have thought that channel owners would have learned from Turner's attempt to launch truTV here and then changing the originating network's profile.

How is there confusion? Literally nobody is yelling at the tv that they can’t understand what Paramount is whilst 5Spike exists.

I feel like I keep having to make this point but the reason for the channel existing is there in the first post of this thread:

Quote:
Paramount Network president Kevin Kay told Broadcast earlier this year that it will be a home to “premium” entertainment formats and “HBO-quality” drama and comedy.

While Paramount Channel UK will not initially air these big budget dramas, it is understood that the long-term plan is to share programming with the US network and eventually commission its own scripted originals and co-produce with the US channel.

If they wanted another C5 branded repeat channel they'd have launched another C5 branded repeat channel.

Why broadcast funny cat clip show?

Those programmes are only shown in off-peak/graveyard slots late at night (~4am) and early morning (~9am).

I expect they're showing them as cheap filler programmes so that they can prioritise their budget on peak times when there's more viewers.

Welcome the current state of Channel 5/Viacom!
...it’s awful, isn’t it.

I see no clear path for any of the channels in the current portfile, It seems 5star current has law and order month. Honest truth is you could switch between the channels and not tell the difference. With UKTV has partly gone down that road but that connected to the fact Gold is paywall and Yesterday is fta.

What there should do is redefine each channel:

* Paramount: Top end drama
* 5 Crime: all those: CIS, Law and order, cant pay were take it away,
* 5 Star general less crime on it
* 5pike: ??
* 5film: films just films which also includes those strange channel 5 tv films at 3pm Maybe repeat them a week later at 9am?

Surely Paramount Network is more competition for their own channels? This channel was not needed. What is 5Star for now? Suits would have been a good addiction to this channel. Will new shows just be spread across 5Star/Paramount?
Any idea how Paramount has done in the ratings since it launched?
With the way they are going they will launch another FTA channel next year.
