Not something I make an effort to watch, but everytime I do catch it filling a slot on BBC1 or notice it listed, it seems to be some sort of Weakest Link special.
And I mean everytime.
Yes, we know Anne Robinson hosts, but really the BBC isn't so great that cock-ups only ever occur on the Weakest Link - the biggest cock up of which seems to have been moving it from BBC2 to BBC1 and losing half a million viewers in the process.
More to the point, which set designer actually thought that would look good on TV? The distortion in the background everytime the camera moved was enough to cause nausea! It was about as comfortable as trying to read a teletext screen with a magnifying glass
I certainly preferred the older style of a variety of clips from different programmes as opposed to the constant specials we always seem to have (Eastenders, Weakest Link etc.). I also preferred the old titles and set although that looked a little silly having what appeared to be a massive studio with Anne Robinson sat on a ridiculously small stool.
The only ones I ever really found funny in the main were the ones that happened live -- because the reaction is the funny part. Most VTd footage consists of someone fluffing a line (which in itself happens all the time and would generally be ignored if put out live), followed by a "cut" from the director and some sort of contrived comment from the actor in-view.
Dull, dull, dull.
So having a whole half-hour of such bland material -- as these specials usually are -- is enough to send me to sleep.
Talking of the live stuff, it amazes me that Victoria Huxley at TTTV has never appeared on one of these shows. There was an early morning bulleting in the mid-1990s where she fainted live on-air mid-sentence -- not funny but one of the most surreal things you'll ever see if you see it as it goes out. One for "It shouldn't happen to a..." really.
There was an edition on the other week that didn't even feature outtakes, but instead 'funny clips' such as a clip from US TV of Bush and Blair being dubbed
Ronke Phillips in her Central days having a massive coughing fit during a GMTV bulletin & a quick cut to the 'This programme continues shortly' caption!

The original studio was quite small, it was just clever set design that made it look spacious.

I suspected as much. I couldn't see them in reality using a massive studio for nothing more than two cameras and a stool.
Tonight's edition featuring the primetime version and last weeks edition featuring the daytime version are actually repeats. They originally showed them before Christmas. The last Outtake TV episode they actually showed outtakes was back in November, It featured Brian Conley cocking it up on Dirty Rotten Cheater.
To top it all, they are repeating the Weakest Link Doctor Who special next saturday, making it the third time it has been transmitted in primetime within twelve months.
