He still does own some TV channels doesn't he?

5 did quite well under him I thought, certainly a lot better than his newspapers have. The Express has been stripped to the bone over the years -chronically under resourced and little read

Odd hook for that article - the anniversary of the start of the first 7 day a week ITV station!?

Desmond doesn't own any TV channels any more, he even sold the porn channels.

I agree C5 started to become a much better channel under Desmond and has only flourished under Viacom.

It's strange that the RTL Group, with all its know-how and resources, never seemed to make Channel 5 (or Five as it was known then) a priority.

The one thing is RTL group could never crack the UK market, unlike the rest of EU. To be fair the UK TV is completely different to EU, but surely there would have clicked about that point?

Yes, but every European market is different, so it's not just the UK versus a monolithic "rest of Europe." One would think that RTL, which has strong television operations in markets as diverse as Germany and Croatia, would have been well-equipped to tackle the UK market, but apparently they lacked the long-term commitment necessary for Five to succeed.
