Well given the nature of the hype caused you would be forgiven thinking something major was up. This could have been sorted yesterday evening with a generic press release.

I don't think it's the Palace's fault that people bought into made up hype

It was a very easily avoidable situation though.

Putting feelings about the institution aside, I think people should remember that the Palace is still a workplace to many, and I think it's right that they would gather staff and tell them first. It might only be a minor thing to us, but these changes could affect many of them and their own duties. Who wants to read about changes at their workplace from an email or press release?

I cant believe the BBC have the story as a full sized breaking news style. 95 year old retires.. OK.

Many companies and large organisations send out emails regarding changes.

Why is it still a surprise to people that the British public likes news stories about the royal family?

Does anyone else think this was a test run for other stuff? There know this was going to happen, but in this day and age you can never tell how it will play out since social media can spread like wild fire?

Also, on a day when the local elections are taking place across much of the country including Scotland and Wales, it's a useful way of filling time that would otherwise be spread across much lesser stories, because the broadcasters can't cover any general election campaigning today, due to that possibly affecting how people vote in the local election.

Something seems odd here. Why the urgency to gather staff together and make the announcement? Surely they could have called a meeting for next week rather than summoning them at short notice?

Was it that urgent or was that just another social media rumour?

The senior correspondents seem to have known there was a meeting and announcement on something last night, news at 10am, etc.

It was just some overinterpretation while most sane people were asleep in this country in the middle of the night...

Btw - I suspect if they had a long lead time, even more likely to leak, more speculation. So they can't win!

Did they though, or is that just social media hype. Sounds like it was just a standard meeting
