What would News 24 have been showing at the time? I imagine it's tricky to seamlessly slip into obit mode when you're continuously delivering news.

I don't know, but this is another thing that intrigues me about the process of activating "London Bridge." If memory serves, at that point News 24 was using a different studio to the main BBC1 bulletins, and that announcement went to Sissons in the BBC1 studio. At NBH, both the News Channel's hourly bulletins and the main BBC One bulletins are out of Studio E.

Assuming that the plan is for Huw Edwards or another senior broadcaster to announce the news, presumably it'd be in Studio E in the first instance, but as that would almost certainly be in use...

Seeing how seriously they take this responsibility I don't think E would be a good idea. I imagine someone somewhere would complain about the staff in the newsroom not wearing black or acting inappropriately for the occasion. With the remaining studios you can control the enviroment.

I could easily see Studio C being used with a suitable image on the screens behind the presenters.

When Mandela died they project a still of what looked like an African sunset with silhouetted people and mountains in the background.

Funny this topic should pop back up when there's a rumour of an announcement being made by Buckingham Palace at 8am this morning (again!)

This announcement which is most likely nothing serious has me wondering, if she did die today. Would they postpone the General Election?

Are they expecting it to suddenly explode, or change colour, or something ?

I think the more pressing question would be are they postponing today's election?

As for the general, campaigning would be suspended but whether that would mean moving it would depend on circumstances if have thought.

Would be a unique situation for a prime minister to dissolve parliament to one monarch and form a new one with another

GMB reports that said announcement has been pushed to 10am - it is not connected to the health of the Queen and Prince Philip.

Of course there would say that. But it is very odd.

I doubt they'd say that if it actually was.

It does seem as though it's mainly the yanks on Twitter getting excited while we're all asleep

BBC reporting it was an annual pre-arranged Buck Palace all staff meeting, and nothing out of the ordinary.

Seems like someone was getting to excited, and not ringing up Her Maj's press office first.

If that is the case how did so many media outlets get this so wrong?
