Tomorrow (Saturday 16th December) sees the last broadcast of Open University programmes on the BBC after 35 years. Instead they will be sent by DVD or on the internet.

Any chance of hearing that fanfare for one final time?

Most people still probably think that they still use that fanfare (dropped in 1991) and the same programmes from 30 years ago. In fact, the earliest programme I've seen in recent years is from 1982, though admittedly that's still old.

Thanks for the hint there, I happen to be up at 5.00am tomorrow for work, so I'll take a look.

I remember reading about this sometime ago, although I thought it has been phased out anyway, as there is very little mention in the press. Usually I don't watch the Learning Zone so I take it little has changed there then.

Currently, the category of the LZ colour-coded blue is labelled as being "Open University & General Interest"...

So I assume, if possible, this will be altered to simply read "General Interest" - unless the LZ is changing entirely presentation-wise to bring it more in line with the new year's new-look BBC2?

If the former is true, we can then expect the Lambie-Nairn "Acorn" symbol(s) to not only reach the 10-year milestone, but also be noteworthy for having survived two complete relaunches of BBC2 itself.

Just a shame the LZ was updated in 1997 - if it wasn't, we'd probably still have the surprisingly hard-to-find and rather neat earlier 90's "2" ident with the ripples, DNA, sharks, equations or what have you floating over it!

Second One Down - what a great ident, shame there's no video.

Yep, though the ripples, DNA and sharks came from the evolution weekend ident (but later cropped up around some schools programmes I think).

Try looking on the Private Parts, I've got a video clip of that ident in Windows Media somewhere, it's of a whole continuity clip and original Learning Zone presentation.
