Not at all dear boy. I don't see suggesting (note: not telling) someone to read their contract of employment as telling them what to do.

The 'silvery blank' is a...wait for it... STEP. Nothing more complicated Row. Why does there need to be a 'point' to it? Its set design. Its there to look nice.

The handrail is attached to the back wall not to the step. What is confusing you is the reflection of the side mirror.

And for the love of god they are not plasma screens they are PROJECTION screens. You've read enough surely to have the terminology right by now.
