if you dialed 666 you'd get a hell of a lot of FIRE!

Actually it's 616. Stephen Fry said so.

To report an emergency from within a BBC building, dial 666.

[offtopic] I interpreted SteveK's comment about 666 getting you fire to be a joke about dialling the firey brimstone world of Hell, what with 666 being the number of the Beast / Devil and everything. My response alluded to an episode of QI which indicated that research showed that in some of the early versions of the book of Revelation, the number is actually 616; the answer "six hundred three-score and six" earned Johnny Vaughan a forfeit. As an interesting aside, a bus route in Russia was changed from 666 because it was thought to be unlucky......to 616.[/offtopic]

I thought all broadcast areas of BBC buildings had silent alarms (light system) in them to prevent a sounder going off in a live studio.

ho ho ho, that would be a fine thing.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but the continuity booths in playout 1 certainly used to have audible sounders.

But surely they'd just have weird lights going off in the live studio?

I don't see why silent alarms would be necessary since they're surely always going to abandon a live programme immediately anyway for the safety of their staff?! Laughing

As a slightly more on topic aside to this off topic subject, a few years ago the Radio Authority, or it might have even been the IBA, allocated a frequency of 666kHz to a new community radio station in, I think, Northern Ireland.
The radio station, which I recall was owned by a religious group, refused to use the allocation, and requested another, which was granted. At the time two other stations in the UK had been using the frequency without mishap.
BBC Radio York, and DevonAir Radio in Exeter.

666 is 600, 3 score (3 x 20=60) and 6

anyway remember seeing an outake from an old episode of question of sport where they had a fire alarm sound and David Coleman says that's the fire alarm we're going to have to hold it there, the camera, which is zoomed onto Ian Botham drops down to the floor and it cuts away

it was a big issues for Ian as the score were even and he'd been asked the last question on the picture board, and knew the answer, when they came back and reshot it it was a different picture, he didn't know the answer and his team lost the game

sadly I can't find a link for it but it was shown on their 40th anniversary show

there's lots of online clips of fire alarms going during live tv programmes and they all have sounders

Well if they can determine it's a false alarm straight away then surely they would continue with the programme and not evacuate?

I'm quite surprised they haven't got silent alarms.

Some areas have silent alarms - but they only stay silent for a relatively short period of time - and if the alarm isn't cancelled during that time then the sounders activate.

Some live studios have a 20-30" warning delay of lights flashing before the sounders kick in.

Some areas have a fire officer present who will talk directly to the security/fire control room in areas where the alarms are muted for production reasons.

All buildings are different - and some have much bigger fire control zones than others.

Doesn't the One Show also actually occupy converted office space rather than studio space. Fire alarms will be configured very differently in both - in the end though I would imagine all new buildings have to have audible and visual alarms - even if one was on a delay.

guess if it's a recording studio you don't want a fire alarm sounding so flashing lights would be apropriate there
