I also wouldn't be too surprised if it's split into male and female categories.

Why would they do that - that would be more sexist than having an all male list.

Guess work - and I'll be forgetting someone obvious, but so far I'd say top ten certainties are:

- Bradley Wiggins
- Jess Ennis
- Mo Farah
- Andy Murray
- Victoria Pendelton
- Kath Grainger

I'd expect Chris Hoy to be added to that list should he win the Kieran and other gold medalists will be fighting to complete the top ten (Tom Daley would be a certainty if he won gold, but that is a big if!) In any other year too I'd expect one of the Wales Grand Slam winning team to make up the numbers, but they're probably fighting for one or two non-Olympic places.

Why would they do that

Because it avoids talk of the lists being sexist if it's all male or mostly male. As happened last year.

This year, you could find worthy winners in both categories so might be a good time to bring it in.

Nice he's being a good sport about it. Has he ever made reference to it since?

Actually, I think that is the first reference he's made to it. Not sure though. He was quiet for a while on Twitter after he left the role and didn't mention anything about it.

I think anyone thinking Bradley Wiggins would win Sports Personality of the Year can dismiss that thought now - can't really see beyond Mo Farah now, especially if he does the double.

As usual, what the hell are you talking about...dismiss that thought? Forget his Olympic gold, do you realise how huge winning the Tour de France is?

What are you all talking about? It has to be Jessica Ennis. As she showed today she achieved excellence in 7 different sports. To me that's the ultimate sports personality.

I agree with that. All the others, whilst they would undoubtedly win during any other year, have excelled in one sport. But Jessica Ennis has excelled across the board in athletics. Plus, she's been the face of the Olympics for a while now so might be rewarded for that too?

I had the pleasure of being in the Stadium this evening to witness the wonderful evening of sport. The emotion of the night was amazing. From a tv perspective it's interesting that Ben Shepherd presents a pre show and a post show for the audience in the Stadium. Also, you don't realise it from watching on tv but there is commentary throughout the entire evening within the stadium and there is music playing the whole time which makes the races really fly along.

What an amazing experience. What a night to say I was there!

I think that's been overstated really. A lot of people won't have heard of her till tonight.

I doubt that very much - she's been the face (well, body) of British athletics for a good three years, very much the face of the games and been endlessly built up over recent months, and especially during the coverage of the games so far. Some might not have known what exactly it was she competed in, but they'd certainly know who she was.
