As for the BBC News coverage - haven't watched any myself but a consequence of the boundaries between BBC News and BBC Sport blurring in covering the games. Perhaps shorter news-only bulletins would do the job better, but really at the moment the Olympics is the news and TV isn't doing anything the papers aren't.
No! I disagree with that, the Olympics is not the news at the moment. The news is what's going on in Syria. The Eurozone crisis. And undoubtedly many more stories that would have filled the news bulletins on any ordinary day.
The Olympics is only news to the British audience in two ways; firstly if Team GB wins any medals; and secondly if it has implications for transport/security etc. Covering the actual Games themselves should not be featuring so heavily in BBC News bulletins, especially when it's on practically every BBC channel all day every day.
How many people can possibly be finding these constant Olympics news updates useful? I can only speak from my own experience, but I either watch the live BBC Sport coverage; or if I want to find out what's happened, I either look online or on BBCi. When I tune in for the news, I want the news. It's way OTT at the moment and is stifling many other more serious issues and stories happening around the world while the Olympics are on.
You can't just generalise by saying the Olympics is the news at the moment. It's only the news because the media is obsessed with it.
