You'd all be interested to know that the studio (pictured above) is infact in Toronto, not Turin.

Quite obvious really. How would CBC get a studio like that in Turin?

Do you get any interactive coverage at all, with viewers able to choose what sports they watch?

It's a useful service BBCi offers here on most major sporting events - but the downside is that it's meant alot of the coverage has been dropped from terrestrial TV, especially in the mornings.

Well hopefully it'll get the message into people's heads that don't have any form of Digital TV that this country is moving on without them.

No. We don't have anything like a red button or something like that. The CBC has always had BIG studios on location in the IBC but not this time.

Some of you might be interested in seeing how NBC does things. Seems they've managed to get a massive studio in Torino itself.

NBC's Today Show is coming live from Turin too.

They're not using that studio, though - they're broadcasting from the middle of what looks like a big square in the city.

Very nice blue graphics to replace the usual orange ones, too!

NBC pay a HUGE amount for the Winter and Summer Olympic TV rights for the USA - and also have a HUGE on-site operation. They have a massive studio on location - and also are one of the few broadcasters with major OB operations on many sites, to augment the host broadcast coverage.

However they use a lot of this production effort to package the content - and because of the time difference show very little live, and even less un-interrupted.

This picture shows the studio NBC put in to Athens in 2004 - NBC Studio - not exactly small Smile

NBC has been criticized for ages about their lack of live content (especially in consideration of their broad cable presence). Many Americans close to the border opt to catch the CBC coverage. That being said, the clout of NBC allows Americans to see some of the more popular events live during "regular" hours in the Americas. For example: the US Men's Ice Hockey team only plays games that can be broadcast live during regular hours so that they may be broadcast live in the States during daylight hours, while the Canadian team is stuck with a few games that occur in the early morning in North America. Considering that commercial revenue from NBC's broadcast of the games accounts for a little less than half of all broadcast revenue from the games as a whole, it isn't that surprising.

Aside from the constant commercial breaks, and "up close and personal" distractions, I like NBC's presentation or these games. The graphical design is sleek, and much less parochial than typical American design. The in-studio announcers manage to convey an intimacy that is vital for elegant presentation (which is a feat for American televison)..

Always amazed me how NBC still stick with delaying all the action till primetime.

They might have got away with it in the past, but now with the internet especially it's a wonder they have stuck with it. Do any US channels carry it live?

And thankfully the IOC learned from Atlanta that going where the money is doesn't always pay off.

It's widely felt Atlanta got the 1996 games over Athens due to the amount US broadcasters would pay for prime-time live action - but thankfully after the flop of Atlanta the IOC have seen sense - and probably realised that collectively the European channels have as much pulling power.
