To be fair to them, there isn't much else going on that isn't Olympic related. Although the top story on BBC London tonight was the anniversary of the riots
Apart from the successful Mars landing, serious splits in the coalition over the elected Lords, homes flooded out in torrential rain, Syria, and a reasonably high profile Tory MP resigning.
All of which I know about thanks to the BBC News website.
So, are you suggesting the BBC should ditch TV news, because it's all available on the website ?
No, I'm merely pointing out that TV is not the place for comprehensive coverage, and never has been.
Slightly on this note - I read the Evening Standard earlier, picked it up on a train. About 98% Olympics. If that's what London Tonight and BBC London consist of at the moment I feel for you!

I agree to a certain extent; most people treat TV news as a fairly comprehensive round-up of the day's news, with varying degrees of analysis. The mainstream bulletins like BBC News and ITV News will mainly report and offer some limited analysis; and the likes of Newsnight and Channel 4 News are where you'd go to get a comprehensive round-up on TV. 10+ years ago, newspapers would have been most people's source of comprehensive news, but that has increasingly been replaced by the Internet. So, I take your point that depending on what you choose to watch on TV, you might ordinarily want to complement that with some form of print media.
However, as Joe points out, at the moment BBC News is not even fulfilling its usual mainstream role. It is obsessed with the Olympics and is offering very limited coverage of other news. I was listening to the BBC World Service this morning and they were managing to keep Olympics news to a limited amount, so why can't BBC News? A lot of stuff is going on in the world at the moment and BBC News should really be covering it as they normally would. I appreciate that the Olympics is the big news in Britain at the moment, so it should be covered by BBC News. But whether it should be covering it in so much detail and leading with it (especially when there is a high level of repetition on BBC1 as it stands) is questionable. That said, I did note that the Six O'Clock News led with the story about tensions within the Government a day or two ago, so that is commendable. But, in my opinion, that should be the norm; Olympics should feature but not lead unless extremely newsworthy.

Given the massive increases in ratings for all BBC ONE news programmes and NC over the last week I suspect you're just not in tune with the national mood. The Olympics is the main story.

Once again, in your typical style, you've twisted what I said to make a point. If you re-read the post, you'll see I said that I appreciate the Olympics is the big news in Britain at the moment. But should BBC News only be concerned with what is happening in Britain? There are major international stories going on at the moment in Syria and the Eurozone, which would be leading the BBC1 news bulletins on any other day.
I'm not out of tune at all; in fact I've been totally sucked into the Olympics and been following it closely since it started. That doesn't mean I want it plastered all over BBC News as well. It'd be nice to hear some other news in detail and with analysis as would normally be expected of BBC News. Do you think that's unreasonable?

Whilst I can't disagree with that last sentence. I think the fact the news programmes are preceded by followed high rating Olympic coverage may have something to do with that.
Anyway ratings isn't the point, you could probably get higher ratings if you just did soap opera related news.

You really ned to get a grip and remove yourself from the Tvforum/Twitter bubble if you think her resignation is headline news. An attention seeking MP famous for trolling left wingers on twitter

Aye, she's got quite the knack for gaining attention. Quite how an attractive, blonde, political party-hopping, prolifically wittering, mildly-erotic ex-novelist has managed to do this is anyone's guess.

2) Why is there no onscreen indication that something is a recorded event?
BBC Three's now showing the Argentina/GB hockey match with a 'Replay' bug under the DOG - but it is half eight in the morning!

That's added by pres - the 6am - 9am slot is just a repeat of the previous evening's 7pm - 10pm BBC One programme. (It has, on occasion, started earlier than 6 where the previous night's programme had over-run.)

I just didn't want to undermine my previous gripe about there being no indication of whether something's recorded or not.
I guess most people would know that there's nothing live at that time of morning, but I still can't complain about there being a replay bug when it's obviously a replay!
